Chris Matthews, Insurgent Emergent Thinker?

I KNOW I TEND TO FEEL EVERYTHING RATHER INTENSELY, but this really moved me in parts. It's long, but it's strong. [23 MB]

I see/have always seen Chris Matthews as a bit of a dweeb. And he has often sailed rhetoric that I have thought very harmful. He has often annoyed me with his stances, or his long, affectionate glances at the codpiece of the Commander. But he is an earnest person. That is his personal shtick, and I believe, his person. He is the mussy-haired, talk-spilling-over, sincere dork. It's why Bush's Genitalic Mission-Accomplished photo op shook Matthews to the core, and made him begin to gush about Bush's Sunny Nobility in the first place.

Which is why I am affected by this clip. It actually made my eyes begin to tear up during part of it, and I had to ask myself why it was affecting me so strongly. It's not only that I'm seeing someone "come around" in realtime—as I have done with a few things in my worldview since 9/11. That in and of itself is beautiful, and ought always to be appreciated. We are so used to being fed all this shit about "Staying the Course," that we are adopting Bush's Dry-Drunk White Knuckle Philosophy of Rigidity. Humans ought to learn, to grow, to change. Goddamn. Can you imagine loving the views you had at 16? Or even ten years ago? I learn, I change, I admit it. (PS, you can't stay young looking forever, stop screwing up your mind and body trying to do so. Another example of the Will to Stagnance/Static thought, frozen experience that is so harmful in our culture. Switch the values from smooth alabaster skin and Firm Tits Forever® to wisdom gained, experience well understood, and accomplishments made...are you trying to poison the minds of children by telling them there is nothing to look forward to but decay?????? That there is no gain to living worth the loss of the superficial elements? And you wonder why the children are going mad!)

So yes, I was moved because I see Chris Matthews in an arc of learning. He is really thinking about what is going on, and not just pushing a pre-determined agenda every time he speaks.

But it was mostly that I stopped and said Wow. Matthews is speaking about Colonialism, he is talking about the True Long War, the war on indigenous peoples everywhere, and historically done so "well" by Western Europe and America (her violent runaway problem child). He is actually live on air talking about our pattern of invasion and attack against people who will (as he says) always rise up with strength, even though they be so outnumbered and outmatched, "punching above their weight." [Quoting Billmon, here, not Matthews. I suddenly am reminded of the phrase The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth.]

Chris Matthews, in the clip linked above, is doing some hard thinking, and admitting that it does not work, this method. On the air. I could just be feeling the moment (it happens), but this voice, the one of today's Chris Matthews, is the one of a man who is in tune with some truth, and cannot help but spill it out.

This is the True Long War, that War for More. More fuel, more oil, more gold. The war of the Strong against the Weak; the Rich against the Poor; the Violent against the Just Want to Live Our Lives; the White against the Brown. Look behind you. It stretches behind us like so much roadkill. Spiritual Roadkill, for miles, and miles, and miles. Now, I'm going further than Chris Matthews, but it is the War he's speaking of. And it's the closest I've heard anyone on mainstream media do so. The lie of the War on Terror is that it is a misnomer. It has sprung from the bloody footprints of this other war.

Hearing Chris Matthews speak on this, even tangentially, makes me very unexpectedly happy, in such a dark hour. It made me begin to cry because I suddenly felt hope that this world might not have to end for us all in an ignorant gush of hot lead and white phosphorus and uranium womb-tumors. I felt perhaps we might grab some sanity just for one moment, hold on, fuck! It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world, but is there no hope? I say if Chris Matthews can begin to speak of this on Imus, perhaps there is! The larger patterns of history are sometimes terrifying, and if you look too long, it seems that there is no way out. No safe way, at least. But mightn't we go with understanding? Do we have to be blind to the very end?

Because until we look at the war of Greed or Fear against the Unsuspecting and Undeserving; the colonization of indigenous peoples, the exploitation of these people and other nations for our own greedy gain, our gaze is problematic, and ineffective in showing us where we need to address the Problem. This lack of conversation is part of why I feel that these days there is not much purpose in listening to the News. There are fake dialogues in place. They do nothing but hasten your ignorance, and someone else's demise, if not your own. In fact, if for no other reason, these fake dialogues and frameworks do hasten your demise by providing a fake outlet and false choice. There are options not offered. There is truth annulled in these hypnotism sessions.

The True Long War is a valid and important dialogue to have. Let's begin in earnest.

UPDATE: As usual, I am let down by this man who pretends to have moments of clarity. Oh, well. Can't second guess. Perhaps it was clarity. Perhaps he just isn't capable of rising above the muck for exended periods of time. Either way, it wasn't long after this that he started espousing some other very sincere but idiotic viewpoint. Sigh.
