Mexican Senate Refuses to Oust Ruiz

Categorized under Oaxaca | Tags:

THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT CONTINUES TO BACK ULISES RUIZ ORTIZ, even if the Senate's approval is couched in terms of Constitutional requirements, conflicts and metaphorical hands being tied due to legal terms that can not take into account la realidad y la compleja vida actual—"the reality of the present complexity of life."

And Oaxaca boils on. And is given permission to boil on. Teacher Pánfilo Hernández exits stage left with three bulletholes in his belly, and barricades are reinforced in Oaxaca, as the PRI declares, with a 74-31 vote, that Oaxaca simply hasn't ceased functioning, and thus must not be interfered with.

"El Senado de la República determinó ayer no decretar que hay desaparición de poderes en Oaxaca, ni nombrar a un gobernador interino, bajo el argumento de que no se dan los supuestos establecidos en la Constitución para ello."

—La Jornada

"The Senate of the Republic determined yesterday that a decree enacting the 'Disappearance of Powers' in Oaxaca will not be issued. Nor will there be named an interim governor, as the Constitutional requirements for such have not been met."

—La Jornada (my rough translation)

I might dive into this more, were my Spanish and understanding of Mexican law a bit better. Yet, I think I scan the important parts. The corrupt croney stays in power because to confront him would be to create a "Constitutional Conflict." The government claims it wants to do something about it, but the requirements of the law simply do not allow justice and peace for the people. The Disappearance of Powers Ultra Special Kung Fu Move (federal removal of Ruiz) is not warranted in this piddling little back-alley mugging situation, but neither is the answer la permanencia y la defensa a ultranza de un individuo incapaz de gobernar; "the permanence and the stubborn defense of an individual incapable of governing."

So there! Business as usual. The citizenry will have neither justice, nor a straight answer. They will have to make do with self-satisfied and endlessly pontificating politicians.

...Or will they?

The story continues....

Off topic but noteworthy...

"Latinos Threatened with Deportation for Voting"

I'll be sure to remember this at the voting booth in November.

Yes, Tenoch (and hi), that slimy move to discourage immigrant Latino voters is something someone brought up in the comment thread here, actually. And regarding Latinos voting Republican, I had to whip out the ole Leguizamo quote here.

Thanks for the link. For what my opinion's worth, I definitely think we all would do well to vote the sleazy GOP out of office ahorita. Or "Tout suite," as the GOP ad says.

I know, bfp. ALthough you and I are dreamers who die hard, because it really oughtta be clear to all of us by now that the entire situation in Mexico is completely controlled. And it ain't rigged in favor of the people, that's for sure.

I do wonder what was the vote count. This can be very telling as to how the Mexican Senate is expected to vote once Calderon takes office.

Thanks for posting this, Nezua. I have been wondering whether to do an update or not. On the one hand, it's just a predictable continuation of what has gone before. On the other hand, people need to hear about the violence and the total pigheadedness of the PRI and the PAN.

I can't imagine anyone, even a shop owner whose business has been destroyed by the prolonged strike, having any faith whatsoever in the PRI. Everyone knew that URO was corrupt, but what has been done in the way of terror and assassination has to have left a permanent mark on Oaxaca.

I know, Charles. That's exaaactly how I felt. I feel that way a lot about updating about Oaxaca...but I think we all want little markers...even if we're all reading the same news and feeling similar ways, or thinking similar things. It's good to have occasional markers in the public dialogue roun' here, or something.
