And End to Racism...the Censorship Way!

Ah, yes. The Dignity of Enforced Values. I see. Basically works like this: "We're really upset about how our people had their will taken away from them and lived in degradation, so we are going to bestow dignity upon our people by taking away their right to decide what words they can use in their music."

Censorship as recognition of freedom. Even Jesse Jackson is down with an Up-is-Down world.

Okay, I'm just a bystander on the black scene. I don't mean to tell anyone else how to think about this. I'm just thinking out loud, here. Just riffin' on a principle. Talkin' bout dropping a box of mirrors.

Of course I appreciate Jackson's logic...or intent. Hell, I do not use the "N-word," and I see no reason to use it ever. But what the hell will banning Black artists and comedians from using the word in their music or their act do? Will that word's absence help anyone forget the legacy of slavery in America's history? I mean, honestly--what is this supposed to do? Sort of like banning Maya Angelou's book? If we don't have to hear that word, then those days are gone? It reminds me of when movie poster makers began airbrushing out the WTC towers from art already made, after 9/11. What was that supposed to do? Make us forget they used to stand? Wanna get outraged about racism? Good! Use this moment to do it, I agree. But your solution to it is implementing censorship to pretend we are addressing social inequality and institutionalized hate? Hell. That's nothin' more than smoke in ya face, baby! Smoke.

So take a deep drag. Dream that you are even tickling the thick, knotted roots of racism with yet another whipcrack of control and forced behavior.

UPDATE: This is funny.
