La dignidad. El Respeto. La credibilidad.

grafik by Nezua NOW I'M NOT MAKING ANY DEFINITIVE judgment. And I know there are good people at FDL. But seeing articles from their site on the Google, now (I don't read the site on a normal basis); seeing articles Caring about the Brown...well, you can say what you want about Mexicans and vendettas, grudges and long memories, I'll laugh with you. But I can't help remembering the whole shebang that went down recently between that site and a good portion of the POC bloggers around. And I can't help remembering the very sentences in front of my eyes that made up some of their arguments for using Blackface. I see the font, even now as I think back.

We all can get tripped up with the White Lens, with the brainwash fed us growing up, by our Neoliberal National stance, by the thinking of the Elite White who makes decisions for, knows better than, is more powerful and able than, and acts either for or against—but always with the supposed superior power and knowledge than—the person of color. We are all capable of spreading El Malestar Pálido. But until an acknowledgement happens, and truth is faced by those actors, and dignity restored—then all this concern just smacks of more Know Better Than Ya, More Able to Save Ya, Still White Here Above Ya.

Alrighty, what did I miss? I don't read FDL anymore, so I'd like to see how they are lovin' them some brown people. I need a good laugh!

I agree with the post; it's not like I don't think we all should care, and the man is Latino, he has the right (just as anyone has the right to comment on such an important happening in america and we should all be talking about it). So you know, it makes sense to me that everyone would care. I hope that's clear. But as I wrote, it feels a bit weird after the hard swerve back from blackface land, que no?

He may have latino ancestors but if you read him he is white, and even says in that one that he can pass for white. It's like Oliver Willis, he may be black but he sure sounds like a white guy, and most times a republican to boot. At least Pachacutec doesn't sound like a republican, but your post is spot on with the patronizing at FDL, including Pachacutec. He's one of those who made it in the white world, and identifies with it. Now he's better than us and able to save us with his liberal friends at FDL.

yeah, donna, you sort of said what i was thinking. that he sounds still into the Lens. i'm hoping that these more obvious signs of hatred against our people will force those so very assimilated ones of us to take a stand. i'm hoping that we'll see more and more of those kinds of posts, and perhaps some who once felt such a part of the mainstream will now begin thinking twice about what they thought was such a trouble-free forgetting.

if FDL thinks that a stream of pro-brown posts will make everyone forget what willful resistance they had to listening to the POC blogging community about using blackface, well...they're not being honest with themselves.

but i guess that's redundant. if they were being honest with themselves, things would have unfolded differently.

Nez, I know what your talking about. There is something about people who normally turn their back, then suddenly decide they are allies because they realize they too are the ones being targeted too. Why didn't listen when we were ringing the first time around or at least acknowledge those who where in the front lines while they were chasing windmills.

yeah, that's pretty much it.

Some of us who have been assimilated through a forced march might pretend to be assimilated and even sound assimilated however in our heart of hearts we will never give in.

Some of were born and raised during the era of blatant hate and open disdain for those of us who were (are latino),I for one will never forget how under the surface that kind of disregard and mistrust is.

I believe in giving people chances to redeem themselves however the majority race always has to earn my trust bigtime. This kind of thinking hurts me more than anyone else and I know it. sigh.

"...however in our heart of hearts we will never give in."

that's an important place not to give in. :)

i also think people should have the chance to redeem themselves.
