EZLN llama a Movilización Mundial para Oaxaca (EZLN calls for a worldwide movement of solidarity with Oaxaca)
Communiqué of the Indigenous Revolutionary Clandestine Committee - General Command of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation.
Mexico.
December 2 of 2006
To the people of Mexico:
To the people of the world:
Brothers and Sisters:
The attack that our brothers, the people of Oaxaca suffered and suffer cannot be ignored by those who fight for freedom, justice and democracy in all corners of the planet.
This is why, the EZLN calls on all honest people, in Mexico and the world, to initiate, starting now, continual actions of solidarity and support to the Oaxacan people, with the following demands:
For the living reappearance of the disappeared, for the freedom of the detained, for the exit of Ulises Ruiz and the federal forces from Oaxaca, for the punishment of those guilty of torture, rape and murder.
We call to those in this international campaign to tell, in all forms and in all places possible, what has occurred and what is occurring in Oaxaca, everyone in their way, time and place. ...
—By the Indigenous Revolutionary Clandestine Committee - General Command of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation.

The people of Oaxaca are not alone. We have to say so and demonstrate it, to them and to everyone.
Democracy!

On November 25, 2006 152 people were detained in Oaxaca city during the violence that ensued that Saturday. On November 27th, 2006, 141 or those people were transferred to a prison in Nayarit, and have reportedly been denied access to family and independent legal counsel. It has also been reported that many of the detainees were bystanders in the march on Saturday, and may not have committed any crime. In addition, it has been reported that several people detained during the Oaxaca conflict have been beaten, tortured, sexually assaulted, and otherwise deprived of basic human rights. I am writing with grave concern for the detainees. If Mexico is to follow basic human rights guidelines, those detainees should be ensured immediate access to adequate medical attention, legal counsel of their choice, and communication with their families. As well, they should be charged with a recognizable criminal offense or released immediately. I also ask that the federal government immediately carry out investigations into the allegations of torture and allow human rights organizations to observe the current procedures taking place in prisons. I am calling on you to ensure the physical and mental integrity of those currently in custody. I am deeply interested in this issue, and very upset to hear about these reports of human rights abuses in Mexico. Should this situation not be resolved in a way that is fair to both the poor and the powerless, I will do my utmost to plan my vacations elsewhere, as well as find ways to divert any funds I would normally send your way. As you can see by my writing this letter, I am active politically, and I am going to make it my business to help my friends see the truth of this matter and act in concert. I would appreciate a reply from you detailing the actions you will take to ensure the proper treatment of the Oaxaca detainees. My concern for the basic rights of individuals in your country is not of a political nature, it is an unwavering and deep-seated concern for the dignity and well being of all humans. Sincerely, ——— |

Thanks for updating the letter and reminding people to send it. I am happy to see that the letter my friend wrote for her friend that was abused and taken by the PFP has been spread around. While some of the detainees have been released, many are still at Nayarit.
