What Matters is What Will Arise From Below

grafik by Nezua SUBCOMANDANTE MARCOS (DELEGATE ZERO) says that the violence in Oaxaca is only the tip of the iceberg, the fringe of the frost, the bubbling up of viral and ubiquitous putrefaction and discontent churning through the heart of Mexico.

In Nuevo Laredo, they told us that the problem in Tamaulipas is that everyone here is like Ulises Ruiz: the municipal president, the state congress, the governor. There are too many in the mold of Ulises Ruiz and the people are getting tired of it. If there is not a civil and peaceful way out, which is what we propose in the Other Campaign, it will turn into each person finding their own way however they can.

Wwe do not recognize the official president or the legitimate one. What happens at the top does not matter at all to us. What matters is what will arise from below. When we carry out this uprising, we will do away will the entire political class, including those who call themselves the 'parliamentary leftists.'

Subcommander Marcos: revolution or civil war

"With regard to the violence and power of drug trafficking, he asserted:"

...[T]hese provide 'another facade' which affects the northern states more than anything, where the central focus is on security, and not on the situation of poverty that exists.

'The conflicts between drug traffickers, or between drug traffickers and security forces, or between drug traffickers and politicians, are overstated, because we know that the politicians are in league with some of the drug cartels.

Meanwhile, the fundamental is forgotten; for example, what is happening in Playa Bagdad, Nuevo Laredo or Reynosa, to mention Tamaulipas. These places only make it into the news when there are clashes between groups of criminals, while what is happening to the people who are working and struggling is forgotten."

Subcommander Marcos: revolution or civil war

img I don't care how comfortable I ever become. I will never rest in complete comfort knowing that there is such a grinding, endless war against the poor by all the rich, powerful, utterly hypocritical and heartless rulers of this world. I know that.

I do not know if it will be in my lifetime. But I am a big enough dreamer (and doer) to know in my bones that this imbalance cannot last forever, no matter how deep its roots in the bank systems, the pockets of the politicians, or our minds. One day this terrible out-of-kilter machine will meet its limit. And on that long-due day, the poor, the oppressed, the forgotten—the meek, as some say—will rise up and step over the stinking, wasted carcass of such primitive, bloodthirsty and greed-driven rule with hardly a look back.

Meanwhile, stay well rested. Stay active. Stay strong.

I'm pretty sure you'll see it in your lifetime. The demographics--a lot of impoverished young men--are certainly there. If the Tancradoists are successful in shutting down the border, it'll happen even sooner than it would otherwise.
