Remembering Ramona

Comandanta RamonaTHOSE WHO ARE AWARE OF THE OTHER Campaign know who Comandanta Ramona was. For those who do not, she was a very important part of the EZLN, an activist for women if ever there was one, and the author of the Zapatista Revolutionary Laws for Women. Her kidney transplant gave her another ten years of life, but Ramona died after a long bout with cancer in January of last year (2006). Her illness is especially relevant, because she was very vocal about the need for health care and hospitals for the poor, indigenous women of Chiapas—which was promised by the Mexican government, but still has not implemented as of yet.

The woman known for a gentle and unassuming demeanor was a liaison between the indigenous of Mexico, the government, and ultimately, the world. She was a role model for any young girl in this world, and su corazón, su trabajo, y su vida should be remembered and celebrated by all who desire peace and justice.

For those who feel for her and want to share that feeling with others, see the announcement below for a video/foto/poetry/art/love gathering in her name to be held in Los Angeles on January 7 of this year (this weekend).

Comandanta RamonaRamona was the first member of the Clandestine Indigenous Revolutionary Committee (CGRI), the leadership body of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), to have died since the end of their uprising twelve years ago. Her struggle with cancer was a long one, in which she received a kidney transplant in 1996 after extensive grassroots fundraising. Most sympathizers consider the transplant as having brought her an extra decade of life. As a result of her illness, Ramona made few public appearances since the Zapatistas came into the public eye following their uprising, but she nonetheless made her mark in a number of ways within the influential indigenous rebel group and far beyond, with its supporters.

i remember when i first figured out that subcomandante marcos was a SUBcomander....

once, a while back, the zapatistas were supposed to meet with mexican officials and the press. everyone sat around saying "where's marcos?" "where's marcos!" Then little ramona (i think it was her) walked up to the podium and explianed that marcos was the "SUBcomander" and that he worked under her, she was a comander. everyone was all shocked. i think there it footage of this somewhere 'cause it was filmed...

My condolences, women understand the need for healthcare, a need so often denied by the male hegemony. And I like that they said 'struggle with cancer', not fight against, which implies those that die are losers, maligning the dead.

hola horsedooty: lo siento that you did not get a response. i like that you are trying to learn here in this place. i'm guessing the prof didn't come back to see your question.

dos cosas, since you are open to learning (i won't answer your first pregunta because you say you have found an answer):

- "se" no es spelled "sey."
- "inglés" instead of "english"

good to see you here, horsedooty.

Gracias,
I saw that I misspelled se (and I do know better) and ingles but I didn't see a way of correcting the post after it had been submitted. Thank you for the kind welcome. Since I am un bolillo viejo, it will probably take me a lot longer to learn espanol. But I will try every day. Colorado Bob and I are migrants from the Craig Crawford list plus we are both from Texas. (crawfordslist.com) Immigration issues are something I am very interested in. Relax everyone I am on your side. I see the current hysteria as totally racist and against everything the US has stood for for over 200 years.

again thanks for the nice welcome,

yo soy Horsedooty!

well, it's good to have ya horsedooty. i wish i could make the comments editable. i tried for a while, but all the hacks for MT out there are old and no good. i'll still keep an eye open.

i guess one of the points i make here is that the growing hysteria, as you put it, is actually very much in line with how america has operated for the last 200 years. but we've managed to keep much oppression and racist thought that is at the heart of much of our policy and law and history coated with a nice, thick glaze of propaganda and fake history lessons.

a lot of things are forcing this issue to manifest as panic or "hysteria" now. but mostly i see it as a solid core of America (or at least a faction controlling most media and law and politics) is stubbornly resistant to the truth: that this is a brown continent overall, has been for thousands of years, and that osmotic action is a natural process that cannot be legislated out of reality.

it's good to know you are empathetic to what we are about here. seeya around soon...

kick it, ése.
