MAYBE IT'S A BENEFIT of being small in blogswampia (OOH OOH I COINED THAT OOH), but frankly, muh dear, I don't give a damn if you delink me or whatnot. I do appreciate those who have linked to me, don't get me wrong. Especially those few who were large or large-ish (Wampum, Suburban Guerilla, Jesus' General, Jack and Jill Politics frontpagin my jpg at MyDD) and did it Backinthaday when not many other blogs of equal size were. (It was a RISK then, oooooh! The great risk.) But it's done. That's it. No outstanding balance. I mean, after all. I just figure they are smart and know quality when they see it.
Here's the liberating part. You owe me nothing when I link to you, either. I link to those blogs that I want to or get around to linking, or cannot resist linking. Important part is that I don't require they link me back! Not overtly or covertly. WOW. Freedom, eh? Isn't that nice?
Listen. I've always really hated it when people said "I love you" and to them, it's a volley to be returned. It's a stick over your head. It's an emotional stick. It's a stick with a hook. It's a way to catch a feelgood from you. I resent that. A lot. "I love you" ought to be said not as a prompt, but as an expression of feeling.
Same with a link. I link you to say Propz!!! Good Lookin! I respect what you're doing! I don't link to say "Now link meeeeeeeee tooooooo!" And I don't respect the game that comes with leveling emotions behind this impulse. So there is not that tie, that weight, that obligation, that drama, here. You and I, even reading each other are independent.
And finally—let me never get caught up with mofos who get huffy with thier precious important digital chain-schlong blogrolls. Whatever. Keep your smoking jacket on, ese! 'm doing what I'm doing here. You're over there, doing your thing. I don't mind a bit.

Being from the dark ages (heck, I had to learn touch typing on a manual!), I still have to double check that I've linked anybody... and never bothered with "blogrolling"... or tracking or anything else... (nah... I get kinda obsessive over my "stats" and number of hits. They shot up, but I think that has a lot more to do with burro afficionados interested in one thing I posted the other day than with any genuine interest in Mexican culture and economics).
Hey, the blogswampia is an ecosystem, and we can't all be the hippopotami in the middle -- some of us have to be the dragonflies and midges.

hi bfp. i'm not sure which "dont expect anything in return" mantra you refer to here (because I'm the one saying it in this post), but yes, as i mean it here it is to describe a link that is offered as an action unto itself, not half of an equation; not a prompt. also, i do not type it as a "mantra," but as a true statement of my expectation of those to whom i link. i don't want links as levers, and i don't use them as such. that is all i mean here by disconnecting linking from expecation. it has nothing to do with football...which i do not watch. :)

(and i don't know why your comment got moderated. did you use a different email? i added it.) yeah, i used to read those sites. that was before i really got around and saw a lot of what was out there. anyway, i don't expect a thing from him. how could i? i don't link or read him. i'm sure he doesn't expect a thing from my (non)linking, either. we're very egalitarian in that way, with each other, you see.
