Waking from the Dream, Pt 4.
Categorized under Latin America | Tags: borders, eat the rich, Guatemala, satire
AMERICA, the land of the free...and the brave. The land of Democracy, the land of Free Speech, the land of freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, the land where you can work hard and make your dreams come true.
Are any of our old ad slogans valid anymore? Even one?
A Guatemalan immigrant who worked for ten years at various minimum wage jobs to saved $59,000, has been ordered by a US District Court in Broward County Florida to hand the bulk of those savings over to the government.U.S. District Judge James Cohn ordered that Pedro Zapeta of Stuart Fla. would be returned only $10,000 of the $59,000 confiscated by Customs Agents as he attempted to board an airplane with in September 2005.
The money was confiscated at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when Zapeta didn't sign a declaration form before trying to board an airplane. The 39-year-old Mayan, whose native language is Quiche, said that he was unaware of the requirement to disclose amounts greater than $10,000 and only wanted to return home to start a business with his savings.
—Migra Matters, Judge rules Guatemalan immigrant forfeit life savings
Nice! Way to net the US fifty thou on a technical difficulty, your "honor." I mean fuck those Mayans anyway! Mel says they ain't nothing but bloodthirsty savages. Mel and Murka know best. Forcing this cat to give up what he worked so long for is just keeping the world safe from...happy Mayans with their own business and feelings of pride in how they were treated in El Norte. And if we let Brown people have pride, that endangers America. Everyone knows that!

I admire that he saved such a great sum. That is no mean feat. It is absolutely sickening that the Department of so-called Justice would rape and rob this guy. I have problems with all the "forfeit your property, even if you're never tried" laws, but I understand going after the ill-gotten gains. This guy was just plundered by the USA.

I would have known about the $10,000 limit but it is because I take so many flights. Middle class privilege, y'know?
The point is that you are not supposed to carry that kind of cash. So, why did they just CONFISCATE it???
I mean, they confiscate pineapples coming in from Cuba. But it is a PINEAPPLE, carajo.

my friend, i am xicano. i am proud of who you are, too! this post was a satire. please read it again with that in mind. in other words when i say "fuck those mayans," it means...the opposite, you get me? this is hard to explain if you dont know the form of "satire." i know it can be confusing.
anyway, perhaps you might want to represent la gente better than you are here, cool? i mean i appreciate your anger for nuestra gente. i'm all for it. but have a bit more dignity. even if i was insulting mayans and mexicanos (which would be, um, stupid of me and self-loathing), you are better served by showing a little more restraint. don't you think? anyway, i may well be a Fucking Bastard, but it is NOT in the way you think.
be well! adios for now.

Dear Mayans, Mexicanos and fellow African (black) Americans
I am an African-American and I've followed this story for the pass two/three years. It is sad that it happened on many levels and proves that information is key. We still don't really know what would have happened if he reported the funds. He may have had to prove how he got it over and over... He may have had to pay a fee and taxes on it , that would have totaled $49-50,000. Who can tell what they would have cooked up. Black people in this country have been beat over the head and striped of earns for the past 300 years. Farmland bought and paid for taken by the Gov and banks in a "tax/payment" glitch. Example: "Sorry, we didn't see this before Mr. Johnson, but Your farm has been under taxed for the past 30 years and you need to pay us $170,000 by Friday. If you don't have it we'll take it over. We know you've paid on time every month but, you need to pay this now" That kind of crap. Legal, but underhanded. So, none of this stuff is new to Black people in this country. Talk to some of us we can tell you some stories. The land of opportunity has been the land of hard knocks for blacks, nothing is easy for us. We always have to be better, smarter and faster to do the same job. The equal rights movement has helped a lot. Many of us would not be where we are if not for the movement. You can also thank the movement because your people have benefited and are still benefiting from it everyday. Black people have been beaten down so much we're numb to it... and to life. And in too many cases we've just stopped trying to do better, which is sad. If you think about all of the work we've done to get where we are now. How many blacks were killed to stop us from getting where we are now. The truth is America has been spilling bad information into your countries/communities about Blacks and tell us bad information about you. We have to realize that we all want the same things. We need to put an end to listening to the propaganda. We need to support each other and work together to balance the uneven scale of the American Society. Whites will continue to divide us and control us with things as simple as a lack of information. Let's talk and balance the scale.

Perhaps Joe Osorio would like to see how it's done in other countries? Go to Mexico asshole and see if they take your cash? Why don't you start a website knocking the way they treat people. It says plain and clear on the forms from the U.S. Government that you must claim anything over 10k. I would imagine our government has reasons for this law. Whether you believe in or not, the fact is this man lied. Let's all lie, make our own laws right? He was lucky to be here and have the opportunity to earn the damn money in the first place. The U.S. doesn't owe everyone an ass kissing. You don"t just get to come here and decide that you are above the law. Why do you people keep coming here anyway? Stay in your own fucking countries and figure it out. I'm sick of your whinning! Where are your sacrifices to make this country what it is? Just Take and Take, get the fuck out!!!

Brothers of Oppression,
yes, the civil rights movement was the foundation for many rights movements. el movimiento chicano in the 60s was part of that, and today's movimiento 2.0 is, as well, and really i see it all as one movement which must keep expanding to include not just people of color, but all those crushed under the feet of the power-hoarders, land-stealers, tower-erectors. thank you for your comment, and i do look to the black community often for stories and solidarity and wisdom, definitely. rage on.

Please hit the donate button below, my friend. I would love to go to Mexico, though if I did I could not really be as political as you'd like me to, the laws there forbid that from any American citizen, as I am. The USA begs this criticism, having set itself up as a land of human rights and free speech. When that is your bar, you better be able to handle the critique. If you have a problem with critique of human rights and such, you should really consider moving to a country like North Korea or something, you know? People there are encouraged to STFU, from what I read. Not so, here.
Which forms are these?
But you don't know. I imagine you don't care. Govt says it, good enough. Right? What on earth are you doing in a nation that encourages free thought? I mean it about moving out, you may wanna think on it.
Well. As much as GWBush acts as if this is the case, I really would encourage you not to do as much.
Anyway, "laws" are just mores enforced with guns. They are written by those who invade and steal land and then they are declared sacrosanct until those elites and powerhoarders want to steal more land and resources. See comment on GWBush above. Then, they just ignore the "law." So what's your point?
He is not lucky. He would not have been here were it not for the economic stranglehold the USA puts on everything it can. Squeezing the lifeblood from Central America and anyone south of our "border." Go read some history.
I haven't the slightest idea what in the hell you mean by this.
No, you have to be President to decide that, eh? Anyway, see above comments on the specialness of "Law."
Well, my ancestors from Mexico are "from here", so I don't know how to answer that. My ancestors from Europe (Romania/Russia/Poland) came to the USA not too long ago fleeing violence and "ethnic cleansing" from people who probably think somewhat like you are right now.
Why did your people come here?
I win because I rule. You, on the other hand, are just a pathetic, hateful commenter buzzing around my blog like a fly on ice cream.
Well, mi gente are in the fields right now. And so were my grandparents. We put food on your fucking family. Did you eat salad this week? We are in the slaughterhouses, we are in the nurseries and the kitchens and the gardens and the orchards. Have you made use of services from these areas in the last year? We are in the meatpacking plants and in the restaurants and in the military, too. Do you owe gratitude toward My People? Yes, you do.
You really ought to do some reading. In fact, Mexico has been squeezed for its labor for years and years. The most egregious period was during the Porfiriato, and foreign interests (that's USA interests, by the way) were given free rein to capitalize on Mexico's goods and resources. It's been a long time that the USA has been working a vampiric and exploitative relationship to the hilt. Go read up on the bracero program. If anyone encouraged Mexicans and Guatemalans, etc, to come here and work and then leave, it's the USA. And it used to be a good arrangement. The USA needed cheap labor, and these people needed work. But then the USA began suckling a fear-nugget and thinking its shit-breath was the fault of those who prop up the economy and closed the gates down. Now deaths are piling up on the border, families are being broken up and terrorized by ICE, women being exploited in the Halliburton detainment centers, children frightened and hungry, economic systems even within the US are faltering due to this as factories move south into MEXICO so that they don't go bankrupt, and ignorant typists like yourself simply hear the word "illegal" or "guatemalan worker" and you froth up like a gas pocket in a mudpuddle. It's low-level info fools like you that the people in power need to have believe in borders. So think about that the next time you sit down to your Chinese-made computer munching Mexican-harvested food talking on your cell phone made in Taiwan to tech support located in India.
