(I'm a little scared cos this almost never happens. Of course, I been saying what Schumer is only NOW saying for, well, forever. So this makes me feel better.

Why does it not actually, though, make me feel better that the Democrats are creeping, ever so slowly, around to all the things I thought about war in Iraq, the FBI, the Patriot Act, blah etc blah etc blah etc?! I mean, I think about these things like for five minutes as day. These people are supposed to think of nothing else. Except of course, their re-election campaigns. Aha, that's why it doesn't make me feel better: cos I don't actually trust them and their new-found 'rightness' on these issues. Am I too cynical or what).

Nezua, I am searching for a quote from you but can't find it. I don't even remember if you wrote it here or as a comment at another blog. I'm sure you will remember writing it, but not so sure you will remember where either, but got my fingers crossed. Anyway the quote says something like some white people feel so entitled to everything that they also feel entitled to POC experience. As bizarre as it may seem they feel entitled to our oppression and marginalization and get angry when we tell them they can't know how that feels and can't speak to it. I've come across one of these over at Belledame's. He's a WHITEPROGRESSIVE who is ENLIGHTENED and EMPATHETIC, besides he lived in a black neighborhood and experienced REVERSE RACISM!

I'm having a hard time not believing this stuff is somehow deliberate. Then again, that might be cuz I'm a conspiracy theorist from way back, but still... this crew has pretty much put conspiracy theorists out of business! Soon as we come up with one, it's all over the news (or, at least, should be) that, yes, that is indeed what they are doing.

Anyway, there are two (or probably more) groups that I've noticed that have been pretty much decimated by their contact with the Bush admin. First one I noticed was the people who *used* to be touted as popular choices as possible presidential candidates - 'moderate' Republicans who had been governors of states (most of them) and who were considered well respected, so on. Like Christie Todd Whitman and Tom Ridge, Tommy Thompson and I think there were a couple of others. All were absorbed into the Bush admin, all had their reputations completely trashed (with their full complicity, it seems) and now no one is even considering any of them, even for dogcatcher.

The other group would be non white men and women and women in general, in high office. Black, Brown and Yellow faces in the forefront on the most unpopular, egregious (and harmful) policies, and (assumed) massive incompetencies, even if that just involves following the directions given by Bush and Cheney - Alfonso Jackson (I think his name is) at HUD, Elaine something...Chou? at Labor, Gonzales at Justice, Rice as NSA and at State and so on. Oh, and of course we can't forget Powell lying through his teeth to the world at the UN.

There are more examples of course - and, also of course, all these people are complicit in not only the destruction of their own reputations but willingly and eagerly placing themselves in the position of being used to re-enforce stereotypes by their actions, whether they were just 'being good soldiers and following orders' or not.

Or something like that. Not quite what I wanted to say, but still.

What's strAnge to me, is how this relationship between Gonzalez and the Fuhrer George Bush started in the first fricken place. Was he watching the Latin version of LaW and Order on telemundo, and say, hey them mexican lawyers are gooood and cute too, I want one of them.
He knows where "all the bodies are buried" too, from representing him in Texas, helping him change his drivers license and erasing his driving record, getting him off jury duty, because of not wanting to reveal the very same record.
I don't care if Gonzales roots for the guys IN the Alamo, every time he watches the movie The Alamo, but when it comes to covering up BusH's crimes, and firing well qualified prosecutors, with a proven track record, and believe me, (It pains me greatly, to say ANYTHING good about a PROSECUTOR), this clown should step down and FAST.

Nanette - my theory on Rice-Powell-Gonzalez-Chou et al is, the Bush Administration actually believed that if they found 'persons of color' to do those jobs, what they actually did in those jobs would be considered good, and the Administration would be seen as progressive and get votes, etc. I have trouble believing this theory because it is such a dumb strategy, but I cannot come up with a better explanation of why he put those individuals in those jobs. It fits with the rhetoric of "my policies could not possibly have a negative impact on persons of color, because look, I have some in my Cabinet."

I agree with your theory, Professor...'Dumb strategies for dumb people'. They (the Bush admin) cultivated some high-profile pets to allay non-white fears (without provoking a knee-jerk white response) and play to conservative elements within that non-white bloc.

Of course, the response to current events within La Cosa Bushtra would be, 'Can't get good help nowadays', but then, they didn't want good help...Just good optics.

That's a good theory too, PZ. Sort of self deception *and* good optics, as darkblack says. Still, it has the same effect, with not one poc coming out of this administration looking like they are competent, operating with integrity, and have a bright future ahead of them.

One good thing, though... I fully believe that some poc join the Republican party not out of ideology, but ambition and desire for advancement. There are so very few of them that the ones that are there are latched on to and feted and have the possibility of advancing quicker than they would as one of many in the Democratic party.

After seeing what happens then, though, some may just feel it's not worth it lol.
