Humanitarian Crisis-Style Freedom
Categorized under Derechos Humanos , Iraq the Casbah , When the Right is SO wrong | Tags: Iraq, Support the Truth
ALMOST TWO MILLION Iraqis have been displaced by ethnic cleansing within the borders of their own "democratized" country. According to Andrea Mitchell of NBC news, the situation is a "Humanitarian Crisis." I do agree.
The investigation by Refugees International obtained by NBC News says the U.N. expects 1 million more Iraqis to be displaced this year within Iraq. But the new report says the United States and the U.N. have until now all but ignored the problem, saying, 'Washington and the U.N. do not acknowledge the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis.'
This is why so much talk of loving up the troops and such leaves me cold. It's not that I want them harmed. My focus just isn't on them. Spending all this time prioritizing THA TROOPZ feelings just seems to me like rolling up on a horrible car accident that has claimed a distressing amount of lives and left half as many wounded—and putting all your resources into the drunk driver who caused it all. I mean, we're here, bobbing and weaving and telling everyone we stand behind our—ºhicº—collision. Because safe streets are on the march!
Madness. I live in a time of utter madness.
Furthermore, and most importantly, the focus on Whether Or Not You Are Trumpeting For the Troops is just a smokescreen to prevent us from dwelling on or even thinking of those things that might enrage people of conscience enough to put an end to this war.
Let more focus be on those who need help so badly right now. Us, we could stop making things worse if we acted like we had a brain about this. They—they are at our mercy.

Democracy does not flow from the barrel of a gun, although power apparently does. Which what this "exercise" is all about, power. And then the children's children will ask, "why are they angry mommy?" and Mommy won't be able to answer.

as a former troop, i find the 'support the troops' while turning your brain off to be deeply offensive.
fact: troops can't speak out freely while in uniform. the depend on us to pressure military and political leaders to keep military life honorable. every time you hear that you're doing something bad by pointing out that some troops have done horrible things, tell that person to shove it. because the 90% of decent people in the military want and need us to look out for them, and that includes maintaining a standard that things like rape and murder ARE NOT acceptable in our military.
there are many great and honorable people in the military. fewer today, because bush has killed so many of them. there's only one way to honor the troops, and that's by not sending them to illegal wars without the right logistical support exposed to violence because of reactions by the iraqi populace to the actions of lawless mercenaries. in such conditions, it is to be expected that some of our troops will respond in dishonorable ways to stress.
