You forge of your self a dull weapon [Support the Truth II]
Categorized under Gobierno | Tags: Power to the People. Support the Truth
PERHAPS A READER cannot readily agree with the stance of holding soldiers personally accountable for aiding such massive crimes as the invasion of Iraq. Perhaps even though it is made clear to us in everything from time-worn fables to Self-Help books to music lyrics to television shows to age old films to mama's words to our own inner urging—that each person in life is born alone, dies alone, and in the meantime, must stand up and be counted for what they have lent their hand to while here—we still imagine somehow that culpability for anything from kidnapping to assault and battery to murder is mitigated and even nullified, nay—justified, by immersing the self into a collective such as the military. Those who argue as much enable the State to carry out unmentionable crimes and and will do so for the end of time, justifying such dangerous and indiscriminate allegiance by arguing that the cohesion of their nation-state justifies all. These are the people who hand over their will and thought with but a slight gesture, and so they are that oppressive State. They forfeit the discernment and skepticism and autonomy necessary to mark one as a reasonable individual and they do it for a song, for a mediocre fee, for a fable, for a fluffed-up casus belli. For these people, even questioning the codified if unspoken set of rules that make these wars possible is taboo, after a point. And yet those who hold this ideology see fit, somehow, to bemoan the wars waged by the greedy elite when it is only their own ideology of Human as Mindless Tool that makes these wars a reality.
Please tell me why should I not form a militia, or my own government? My own group of people who decide upon a book of laws? Why are they, then, not justified in killing where killing would otherwise be thought a crime? Because they are not your gang? Yes. And that is all. So at least we can be clear on that. There is no great morality that can be defended by any nation, and especially one that operates on the dictums the US does and engages in the hypocrisies that she historically has.
There is no such thing as Liberty and Democracy, nor Freedom when you seek dispensation of same from a Government. Because in the end, those glorious ideals and speeches and laws will be communicated with steel and blood and agony and murder, and based on reasons you may or may not agree with. Just as we see now. Just as we have seen in the past. Just as we will see again. For there is no law of society but force. Everything else is a conditional addendum. And to loan your body and will and force to the State—and unconditionally—is to forego your humanity and forge of your self a dull weapon.
Arguing that somehow the TROOPZ are justified in killing and causing and enflaming harm to humans simply because they are Tha TROOPZ (and having signed agreement with all that that entails, thus losing aforementioned individual will and blame) is a circular definition. Even if I pretend it makes sense, it only makes sense as long as you justify your gang having rights to harm others due to them being YOUR gang. Again, no moral advantage. No empirical truth. No great Ideal of Freedom or Beauty. Just force.
But okay. Say I allow for OUR gang being righteous in killing and causing harm in a giant Wrongness simply because they are OUR gang. If I say, at this point, that these soldiers are still responsible for helping crimes like the Iraq War to continue a day longer, you say, no—they must follow the will of the government, which represents the People. And I say O? Really? I only ask, then, what would be your answer to ending wars like this? For it seems the People do not want it. But there is no answer from these people at this point. They must now hem and haw and point to suits in D.C. and muse on what they will be strong or self-interested enough to do, wriggling around the truth that each person must be responsible for what they lend their heart and hand to.
You may say the system is self-correcting. The liars will be brought down, the war ended, the invasive P.A.T.R.I.O.T. laws repealed or adjusted....but how many humans have died behind this invasion that never should have happened? How much money burned and squirreled away by private contracting companies or men like Dick Cheney and his Halliburton friends? How many hundreds of thousands killed? How many children born mutated from the effects of spent uranium? How much the world polluted? How many American familes fractured? How many minds destroyed in Iraq? How much goodwill wasted in the world? How much hate for the Empire spawned? How many new enemies sworn in?
These things will not self-correct. And if they do, you may not like the redaction. Either way, I say the system is disastrous. I say the system is poison. A lie. A lullaby to mask the sounds of flames as the house burns down around us.
As long as we abdicate control of our destiny to politicians in D.C., and train our children to abdicate control of their own morality and ability to judge the Rightness of wars, then mass-murder can and will be desirable and initiated by tiny, scared, greedy men in rooms far away from the killing; waged by a brainless throng of soldier-tools, paid for by masses of people who don't consider themselves integral, responsible, and culpable (and thus will never consider withdrawing actual support (cash)); and blamed on other pawns, nations, reasons....
It is not that this administration is bad for the world. Because it was also the administration that launched the Vietnam War that I speak of. It is, too, the administration involved in the Iran Contra scandal and cutting secret hostage deals with Iran that I speak of. It is also Clinton's administration as well—read up beyond the dashing front page photos. He was elbow deep into some nasty shit, and he didn't care like ya think he did.
American government is a greedy, rotting cluster of self interest and propaganda. Some of us play with the spent casings of shorn- or worn-off ideology and it is our Sport. But this is all government, and this is the nature of the beast. Not just American government. Governments are anti-person, anti-planet, anti-kindness, and anti-reason. They are complex control and profit arrangements represented by well-funded advertisements designed to convince you and I that we are better off than we ever can be or will be with such devious and destructive entities amongst us.

tragic, that the troops don't see they're just hired killers. Tragic, that they confuse the government with the country (panoramic vistas and people, which are worth caring about). Tragic, that they have no alternatives usually--that's what I see with the students at the UTX where I work sometimes, from these little towns with zero opportunity, such that being a hired killer is an improvement. Tragic, we cannot or do not teach our kids how to see this.
American gov is just about good old boys scratching each other's balls.
If you start your own country let me know Nez, that first paragraph was excellent surpassing your usual excellence. I wish I'd written it ;)

I never thought of a militia as an organization designed to protect us, the citizens, from knowing our best interests until now.

Do you have a Clinton post in you? Dismantling welfare, expanding the Federal death penalty, etc.? It would be instructive to many.

prof zero,
i just read the additions in Howard Zinn's updated People's History. he provides a scathing review of clinton and his administration. worth reading the update if you are hungry for a good accounting of halo-bill (to borrow from Nezua's metaphor).
