Addendum on Speech Rules

Categorized under Blogando | Tags:

THERE IS NO REAL PLACE to drop this in, and it bothers me. I keep waiting for an opportune time, and it won't arrive. So, because I recently linked to the kerfuffle that went down regarding my now (in)famous reply post to Glenn Greenwald's post Awkward Discussions on Race and Obama, I have to add that a couple weeks after that exchange, Glenn did come back and email me. He has my respect because he attempted to overcome his belly reactions (paraphrasing his words here) and engage a dialogue with me. Any person who does this, of any ethnicity, for any reason has my respect. It's so easy to keep going on our own emotion, conviction, and inertia.

Glenn did feel there was merit to what I was saying, and was interested in continuing the conversation. The plan was for me to post further on it, and he would too, and we would engage my commenters and we would all talk, test and exchange ideas. I told him after a day or two that I couldn't figure out how to make another post on it, because last I knew, I was waiting for his response to the questions I posed him in the thread. So I felt the ball was in his court, and if I posted it would just be to say "Okay, the ball is in your court." But I felt the invitation already stood. He said he would respond, and we would figure out a way to continue the talk, but he did not, probably due to a busy schedule or other life-type things.

But since I keep linking to the Speech Rules or Beliefs and Attitudes? post (for I feel it is a good example of a common complaint) I wanted to add that that is not exactly where we left off. I feel it's only fair to clear that up and add the not small effort that Glenn did make, afterward. I also feel it important to add that just because I linked that Speech Rules post in my latest Imus post, I am not equating the two instances. I was drawing a parallel (and this seems clear to me, but just in case) between Jon Stewart's minimization of Imus' racist words (Jon said "offhand remark by an elderly man") and the common complaint that offhand conversation is stifled by such considerations of oversensitivities ("hidden speech rules").

I'd post the email exchange between Glenn and myself now if I'd thought to ask him first, and I suppose I could just mail him and tell him I'm posting it, but I feel this post will serve. The email exchange basically showed us trying to make progress, and Glenn admitting that it would be hypocritical to ditch the discussion based on what he had written about airing things despite discomforts in the first place.

I know it was a while ago, but Glenn, if you are still interested, here is a place where we can continue it. Especially in light of Imus and all the other "gaffes" out there lately, perhaps there is something further to say. I asked you in my email if you had had any thoughts in the meanwhile, since the Big Thread. I thought that might make a good jumping off place, if we were not to return to the original exchange. I understand...the thread got messy.

Either way, the ball is still in your court, bro.
