Freedom on the March, Verdad

Categorized under Iraq the Casbah , When the Right is SO wrong | Tags:

THE LUNACY of the Bush Doctrine becomes more and more evident as we watch his spoiled seed bear fruit.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of Sadr's supporters crammed into the backs of trucks or into minibuses draped with giant Iraqi flags to make the 100-mile journey south to Najaf. Passengers waved flags from honking vehicles. On arrival, people slept in parks, on sidewalks, and even inside Najaf's famed Valley of Peace cemetery, which was the scene of vicious fighting between Sadr's partisans and US forces in 2004. Huge vats were wheeled out into the streets to cook for the crowds. ...

"No, No America. Death to America," read some of the banners.

'I want the occupation to leave right away. Now, no timetable. We want to be ruled by Iraqis only,' said Farhan Turki, one of the protestors. ...

Col. Steven Boylan, a US military spokesman in Baghdad, praised the peaceful nature of the demonstrations: 'Iraqis could not have done this four years ago.' He told the Associated Press that 'this is the right to assemble, the right to free speech.... This is progress.'"

—csmonitor.com, From hiding, Sadr rallies against the US

It's true, though. Four years ago, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis could not and would not be uniting and vocally and passionately wishing the USA death with one, heartfelt movement. We have united citizens of other nations into an inflamed mass of hatred against us. Wow. I feel happier for them already. We should encourage this everywhere.

Let's keep it up for another five years! Boy, we could really see the Freedom™ explode then! The world will soon look like one big fourth of July celebration if we keep spreading this wonderful Freedom™. Holy God in the Stars 'n Stripes Heaven above, it's good to be an American today.

This rally is yet another proof that dubya wasn't lying in 2000 when he said, "I'm a uniter, not a divider".

There is a no so subtle subtext to this and other media mentions of Sadr, the so called "radical" cleric. While many say that he is a dangerous man, somebody who should have been killed or captured a long time ago (remeber the last time they tried?), they don't tell the public why. And why is he so dangerous because he is a nationalist, thats right, he is the strongest voice for national unity in Iraq, one that according to Professor Cole's sources said:

Sadr MP Nassar al-Rubaie said, "Today is a call for resistance, for liberty and honor after four years of Occupation from which Iraq has gained nothing but killings without any services, even electricity and water. There is no sovereignty for the people or the government. We are not saying that sovereignty is limited. We are saying that it is absent."

That is what the American occupiers and their Iraqi proxies fear, a voice that denounces the realities of Iraq as an American neocolonial stronghold. And if he managed to unite both Shi'ite and Sunnis against the Americans, in a two front war, the Occupation would be untenable. A true Tet Offensive.

I re-read Baghdad Year Zero by Naomi Klein when I saw this demo, everyone would do the same as these guys put into the same situation.
