Not to mention Allende, Neruda, Alvarez, Garcia Marquez, Benitez, Garcia Lorca, Saramego (okay not Spanish-speaking but you know, Portuguese would be ghetto too prolly), Anaya, Anzaldua, Villareal, Castillo, Moraga, Rechy, Fuentes...Sabes, I'm happy having these people with me in the ghetto!

Ok lets count all the things that would have to change if English where the official language, for everything:

Most of the names of south western states, you know:

Tejas, New Mexico, California, Nevada....

Most names of towns from Michigan to Oregon, plus street names as well, except those called Broadway or Main Street...would make streets hard to navigate, but thats a small price to pay to our English masters....

The Amish...they would be right out...

Every other county not named Orange county would also have to change their names (most of those names belong to original owners, the Native Americans!)

Every single helicopter flown by the U.S. Army would have to change its name, you know like Cherokee, Apache, Comanche...

Every Civil War chapter of every American History book ever written would have to changed....William Tecumseh Sherman will not do....

The newts would be fine...then again, what kind of uncaring/sadistic parents names their kid Newt?

The fun thing about Newt, he's such a hapless, utterly clueless tool that he provides oodles of unintentional humor for the rest of us.

What also cracks me up about Newt, is he claims to be a historian, he's even written a couple books on history about IIRC. Yet the guy's clueless about the Mexican War in the 1840's and the critical set of laws that came after its wake, similar to the ones in Florida some decades before-- fully 1/3 of the nation!

Specifically-- are you listening, Newt?-- the laws and provisions providing special recognition and status to that "ghetto language," Spanish, as a language equal to English in the public sphere in Southwestern states and Florida. IOW, Spanish was specifically regarded not as an "immigrant language" but as the original language of the urban and rural societies of the region, preceding English by centuries and therefore equal to or superior to English as a language of legislatures, statehouses, city councils, schools, hospitals, libraries, courts and archives in the SW, Florida and Puerto Rico.

La gente agui, Newt, you see, have been speaking Spanish here for many centuries before the first Anglo started babbling English here, and we continue to do so. Thousands of California, Tejas y Puerto-Rican soldiers don't speak a lick of English, just beautiful Spanish, and yet the US military is still happy to snap them up to send off and fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Latinos who've been in the USA and used Spanish for centuries are good enough US citizens to fight and be killed in US imperialistic-- um, er, "democratizing" wars-- then we're good enough to retain our culture as well.

That's right, Newt-- in the wealthiest and most important US region, the SW, Spanish isn't merely a temporary or immigrant language, it's a permanent language that preceded English and is essential to the very cultural fabric. IOW, professionals and politicos like Newt have to speak and write it. English is the "ghetto language" around here, Newtie-boy. That's why all the schools in California, Arizona, Tejas and Florida-- even up through the universities, graduate schools and professional schools-- are gradually transitioning over to a double-immersion format that teaches in both English and Spanish equally, as Spanish is integral to the culture here. (Note to Newt and other smart-a**es-- that translates to, "if you wanna teach in a school in the SW or Fla., it would behoove thee to aprender espanol muy rapidamente.)

The GOP's just lucky they have slightly more sensible and sensitive candidates than Newt, like Giuliani-- who I could actually see myself voting for, certainly more so than that treacherous, uh, "Democrat" Hillary Rodham Clinton, who feigns friendship to us and then turns around and pushes for that repulsive border fence and the Iraq War that's getting thousands of Latinos disproportionately killed and wounded to boost up the profits of oil companies. (Although Obama is #1, he gets my vote above anybody else, Democrat or Republican.)
