TOMORROW IS MAY DAY, or International Workers Day. Despite the fact that the United States has tried to neutralize the day and ignore the history, it remains an important and widely recognized event, nonetheless. For Mexican Americans it has significant resonance, and we all remember what last year was like, as well as the backlash that has been unfolding ever since. But jailing Mexican workers and children will not stop us, White America. You cannot stop us and you never will. So as a friend recently said, you may as well learn Spanish. And you may as well learn to love your fellow human and stop thinking of them as slaves or "guests" that you want to send back downtown when they are done shining your dishware.
May Day is a special day for yours truly, también, as it not only marks the day when Mexican@s unite nationwide in the name of worker's rights and immigrant rights, but also the day when I first put my feet and body out there to join in with mi gente. I was living in Postcard Town, and I made it clear to my very White and suburban neighborhood where I stood by flying the Mexican flag at an equal height with the American flag. Things began to get uncomfortable there soon after, as you can imagine! But as I'm sure you know by know, I am not one to shrink from confrontation.
After I hung my flags, I caught the train into the garment district of Manhattan and took a bunch of photos and stood, for the first time, in solidarity with the Brown™. Although I had already embarked on the journey of coming back to myself months before—studying Spanish as well as using my given last name on my first published book—this day marked a clear and tangible line I had stepped across. I have only pride and gratitude to this day that I did. And that I continue on.
Tomorrow this blog is one year old, and it has been a good, good year. I have learned a vast amount, I have opened my eyes to many things, and I have joined in with mi raza and helped in all the ways I have been able and allowed. ¡Por mi gente, mi compromiso es profundo! ¡Venceremos!
