word...the original has the girl on the shoulders of her father, an unnamed couple with their child at a civil rights rally....but i cropped it only because i love the mood/implication of the thoughtful girl in front of the MLK jr poster for the purposes of this post...

This is a wonderful image, Nezua. Just beautiful.
(Heh, obligatory first-delurking spiel: I read you often, and point to you and your wonderfulness in all sorts of difficult conversations. Most notably/recently, in a discussion with a Nice White Man (I don't think he considers himself far left enough to be a WHITEPROGRESSIVE, even though he is very loudly Sympathetic and Allied With The Causes of Women, The Poor, and People Of Color... except that he thinks we're all OVERSENSITIVE and overreacting, and that to lump any of that compassion under the umbrellas of feminism, antiracism, or class activism is going too far and buying into "binary thinking," no matter how nuanced the actual stance is), who insists that his adoption of a pair of Korean Kids gives him special sensitivity to racial matters, and that his being a SAHD gives him special woman-understanding powers. So special are these connections that he can deny both white and male privilege, all the while patting us on the head and telling us we're overreacting. And then getting mad at me because I refuse to be his Black/Japanese Magical Negress and shepherd him through the complicated process of raising Korean kids. Because I should know. *nods* Not that I was in any way talking about his kids, or race, except tangentially and all I wanted to do was point out that he insists that group-level phenomena don't exist and keeps butting into policy-level discussions with "but I'm a Nice Christian Man and I treat everybody the same, so why are you being meeeeaaaaannnn to meeeeee?"... but still.)
Ahem. I digress. I love your work, and the shot is excellent!

how magniloquently you present this typical stance of the Nice White Man...if all the energy that went into denial of a lens went, instead, into examining the lens, the desired effect (to not be seen as wearing one) would arrive...because he would have seen beyond it by then.
thank you for your words. and for reading.

*laughs* If that energy were devoted elsewhere, think of the change that could happen! We'd solve world hunger in an instant, and have Hydrogen Cell cars like yesterday.
