The Violent Minority
Categorized under El Malestar Pálido , Medios | Tags: pundits
THE SILENT MAJORITY: until now, that is! Finally, Glenn Beck tells us what it is like to live in America as part of an unrepresented, hated, and oppressed group of people: the White, Christian, Conservative, Male. Surely a harsh road to walk. But with brave soldiers of truth like comrade Beck, we can now know what hardships and suffering he has endured so bravely, and therefor, adjust our society to be more considerate of him and his brethren.
I mean, I was talking about it with my family yesterday. I said, I'm tired of being the least popular person in the world. I said look at our family. We're Americans. Nobody likes Americans. We're Americans, so the world hates us. But then inside of America, we love America -- and that's becoming more and more unpopular. So, we're not popular with Americans.
Then we're Christians. That's not popular anymore. But not only are we Christians, we're Mormons. So, we're not even liked by the Christians. I just -- I'm white. I'm human. There are a lot of environmentalists that don't like humans, but within the humans that accept humans, I'm white.
The majority of humans don't like whites. I mean, I just can't win. You can't win. And why is it? Because if you are a white human that loves America and happens to be a Christian, forget about it, Jack. You are the only one that doesn't have a political action committee for you."
—Glenn Beck, Chief Advocate for the Wealthy, White, Christian, Male Coalition
The Definition of Privilege? Or at least the epitome of a spoiled (insane) brat's viewpoint? To expect to advocate torture in lands that are under illegal occupation and still have the world at large love your national style. There's just too much to even comment on here. But personally, I would say to you, Mister Beck: If you truly are tired of being the least popular person in the world, stop talking from your rectum with so much certitude. Rectum-breezes + Unwarranted Certitude = unpopular. I mean, everyone knows that.

I honestly don't think there are words to describe the level of moron that Beck is, everytime you get close he unveils another whole new level of idiot, from thanking a torturer for his work on Iraqis to this victim shit. He's like some kind of retard savant wingnut, he's 'Rainman' if Bill O'Reilly played the Tom Cruise part. He's supernaturally imbecilic.
You see I'm trying but I can't even begin to map the outlines of this arsewit, aaarrhhggghh! If I spent the whole week eating faeces, vomit and tumours I could still shit a better intellect than this numbskull. Of course he's nothing compared to those who give him work on national 'news' networks, that's genocide programming.

Of all the right-wing talk-hate media fools, I dub Glen Beck the "Panicky Fool" the "Chicken Little Fool." Sometimes what doesn't kill you makes you stupider, like alcohol and cocaine did to Glen and George. Everyday is Armageddon with this guy, except he over hypes some threats and ignores others. A few examples below:
Over-Hyped Threat:
The Barbarians at the Gate: Either its Mexicans or Blacks or Muslims, but the Red, eerrmm I mean the Brown tide is coming! What bout the tide that is already hear Glenny boy, the tide or racism and intolerance and Imperial ambition.
Real threat:
The Environment. Listen Glenny boy, its not just the cute harper seals and baby kitteh lions, it the water you drink and the air you breath. All that money you get from your sponsors the oil companies won't get ya to heaven any faster.
Oh and by the way, the biggest haters of Mormons are....drum roll please...extreme Evangelical pseudo-Xristians! Your biggest allies, some of your own listeners! But the again, its ok to sleep with the devil, if you don't mind him shoving his cloven foot up your ass once in awhile.

This has to be my favorite part:
Because at first glance, that seems totally nuts, right? There are plenty of political action committees whose primary concern is the American white Christian male, never mind the ones that advocate for various corporations and industries, which are of course dominated by white Christian men...but wait! Glenny Boy specified "...that loves America..."! So, in fact, he may be right, because just about every PAC that advocates directly or indirectly for white (soi-disant) Christian males is actively engaged in hurting America.
Niiice trick, there, Beckums! And here I thought you didn't know what you were talking about.

Nez, there are many times when I wish I had your stamina for the fight. Eventually, I may develop it, but for now, all I can do is just be really disappointed that things like this are still acceptable.

ah, well, Z. it is a stamina, i guess.
no one person or site can keep an eye out for all things. i'm afraid if you feel something is personally disrespectful and i do not catch it (or even if i do not agree), it is up to you to bring the "fight." it is also best, as each person who has personal reason to take offense at any lazy speech habits of others' will be in the best position to advocate for their own beliefs. most people here are reasonable and will hear you out. i am not necessarily going to know or be willing to police each and ever instance of offense.
i'm sorry i didn't catch that or take offense. it's the "retard" part, right? is "idiot savant" still okay? if not, here's a game. fill in your own phrase there, make it a funny one that says the same thing. that wll give people an example of how to be funny without resorting to a phrase that some find hurtful. because honestly i think many of us are so used to using humor that relies on these types of things we don't know another way to be funny. i, myself, realize it takes more thought to simply find new funny phrases, but unfortunately, most humor ridicules someone or something. the question is how to phrase it without lording power (verbally) over those groups that already lack power or have had it taken away or who suffer from lack of power and lack or recognition of same. i guess i'm guilty...i found it a funny rant, picturing a 'retard savant wingnut' as being unto itself.

Wow. I'm just... amazed at how similar that sounds to a bunch of conversations I've had.
My last boyfriend was a white, upper/middle class male (Canadian, largely agnostic with Unitarian leanings), and whenever race/class/gender/religion came up (which was often, because I was a sociology major, and Brown, and female...), we'd have what seemed to be this very conversation. He was a sweet guy, and not nearly this moonbatty, but he felt like he was attacked every time someone mentioned privilege, or power imbalances, or oppression, or really the mere concept that people were different and maybe just being nice wasn't cutting it.
And there's the guy I was talking about in your MLK remembrance picture thread, who has the same issues. "I'm white, middle-class, Christian, and everyone is picking on meeee! I'm a nice guy; why does everyone hate me?"
Maybe it's just that the White Lens is a cloudy one. Something about it seems to obscure the very notion of group-level phenomena, and makes it absolutely impossible to separate critiques of kind from critiques of person. Try as I might, I don't think I've ever managed to convey to someone stuck in that mindset that you can be a wonderful person and still have biases and privilege; or the converse - that just because I'm criticizing something you did/said or a group that you are a part of/affiliated with/sympathetic to doesn't mean I'm criticizing you, personally.
It's particularly annoying because the staunchest adherents to that are often otherwise sweet, intelligent, sympathetic people. Most of them wouldn't hesitate to offer a hand to a friend in need regardless of their identity markers, and would volunteer or give money to causes they believed in. They're not bad, just... willfully blind.

It's not about the words but how they're used and the meaning given to them because of that use.
Yes, retard is a pejorative as offensive as the archetypal racial pejorative, but wingnut is usually just a general pejorative, and savant is a purely neutral descriptive term. In this instance, though, they are used to insult, and that casts wingnut in a different light, making the whole thing, particularly with the addition of the movie reference, a hat trick of disrespect and denigration against the intellectually or mentally disabled, the neurologically disabled, and the psychiatrically disabled.
The idea being that it is safe and funny to use these groups to demean someone else purely by virtue of comparison to these groups being -automatically- demeaning.
Okay, I got that out, now, and I am hopeful that I won't have the same issue should we need to discuss this further.
Also, I discovered that, in order to get this out, I had to separate my... areas of discomfort. I'll email you about the other one when I can.

sorry about that "retard" thing, bro. my bad that i laughed at the phrase. i offer my earnest apology, for what its worth.
but "wingnut" is already used to insult. casts it in a different light? i don't see it that way. "hat trick"? well okay. i think the main problem is "retard." "savant," after all means "genius," more or less.
but i feel you. no need to quibble over it; i do get the idea that calling someone a "retard" is an insult. whether or not anyone is actually labeled "Retarded" anymnore or not doesnt matter, as it uses the idea of having mental disability to insult. although to a non-disabled person, that would be a valid insult. yet, it would make those who are mentally disabled feel crummy, tell the world they are the undesirables, and i know what that is like. i do understand. sorry i didn't before, and again, sorry to hurt you or anyone else by laughing at that.
on how the word relates to you: my youngest son has what you have (the doctors say at least) tho it may be a variation, i am sure (?). either way,i wouldn't think of leaping up for him if someone said "retard" (clearly, i did not). because...i don't see it that way. i'd never ever even think of him that way...should "retard" offend me on his behalf? i wonder. maybe i should be offended... but i don't think so. i don't say that to justify hurting you. just to say i simply don't think of him or his "diagnosis" in that way. not a bit.
thanks for having the cojones to write.
and
i guess "rightwing dumbass" is better. or hmmm.... "a wingnut softbrain donkey-snot" works well.
look forward to your email.
