Letters for the Bizarro Hole
Categorized under When the Right is SO wrong | Tags:
THE KEY TO SUCCESS and happiness in the USA? Apparently, it's an easy formula. Assimilate, stop calling yourself a "Mexican American," open your eyes to how evil the Democrats are, and vote Republican! Ay.
This letter is gross (not to mention condescending, fullofit, and transparent) in so many ways I can't even begin. If nothing else, it really peels my habanero when someone says "Most Latinos blah bla blah blah" as a way of convincing you to do the same. It's such a politician's tool, such a manipulation, such a high-school peer pressure piece of caca. "Most people in this room feel good about me because they understand that I am the greatest." Isn't it so clever. "Most Latinos are beginning to open their eyes and see that—" SNORE
There are so many lines upon which one could use to choke nearly to death laughing, but I just don't have the time. Although it is nice to know us Latinos are finally "beginning to realize" that we can "pursue the American Dream." Gee. We took a while, but I'm glad we're getting it. Must be all that melanin clouding our brains?(Too many spinach fumes?)
Now, I don't know that any of these fools running for office can save or fix a damn thing around here, but as far as voting Republican? Well. I will stop long enough to quote John Leguizamo:
Latinos voting Republican is like a cockroach voting for Raid."
Enjoy the fine mist of your self-hypnosis, Mister Frank.
update: I really don't mean to say that Democrats in power can't do as much harm as any other "party" of people, nor are they guaranteed to make everything better or be devoid of racist thought, nor do I intend to imply that all Republicans are necessarily racist people as individuals. But that letter I linked to was so crass and artless it could not escape comment. Also, in this day and age the class known as "Republicans" really is one that stands apart. Plus, I have not forgotten the style of campaign ads that we just weathered from the Right, in anticipation of Nov 2006. Ugh. They still feel pretty fresh to my mind. Forget the "I'll call you thing," even. But that whole "brown hand over white girl's mouth" graphic? It's spoofed somewhere in my archives. Remember that one? "If Democrats have their way," or whatever. And it goes on all year. Talk about black people swimming, spanish is the language of the ghetto, and so on, Macaca, Macaca, Macaca. Racism in the GOP is not a fluke, it is a feature of the typical mindset. Feel free to argue. But it's what I've seen.

Let's see... it's GOOD to assimilate, and hyphenated Americans are bad, and the guy is forming an ethnic chapter of a political party. Am I missing something here?

Well look who he's quoting. Teddy Roosevelt, hero of the conquest of Cuba. Same war when we grabbed the Philippines.

Ok, I teach freshman writing seminars and I give this a D (I'm feeling generous today). I just copied and saved it even so that I can use it in class as an example of piss poor, disingenuous argumentation. Like you say, not one shred of evidence, just all of this "most Latinos" business.
"Latinos are beginning to realize they can pursue the American dream, seek opportunity and achieve success and don’t need the government to be the resolution to their problems."
That almost sounds like a call for anarchy if you ask me.
