THE SAD PART about so much violence and human harm done all over the world is that it is but a reaction to a reaction. If the world would listen to all of its inhabitants, and flow with the changes that these voices require, there would be a world of peace. Right now. But stupid humans that we are, we still think we can Whack-a-Mole and tightly control nature to conform to our greedy and petty desires. Walls, justified theft, exploitation, and a pyramid wobbling ever more dangerously. Of course, if we do not grow and learn to see the causes of our social ills, rather than focusing on the symptoms, the violence will eventually open its starved maw and swallow us all. Perhaps that is for the best, if we are so incapable of listening.
The riot is the language of the unheard.”— Martin Luther King Jr.

Hola, Senor Nez:
Happy first of de Mayo.
Today, our war president is all set to issue his first veto since taking office. No doubt his brave action, in the face of overwhelming common sense, will galvanize his base.
I heard the actor, Don Cheadle, being interviewed on NPR this morning. He has just co-authored, with John Prendergast, a book on the subject of genocide. They talked about the situation in Darfur where (surprise, surprise) the U.S. is less than wholly committed to stopping the killing. He cited two big reasons for this. First (and foremost)--the U.S. is simply devoting most of its foreign relations resources and attention to killing all the (bad) people in Iraq. Secondly, the U.S. and Khartoum are "partners" in the "Waronterra" and what the Sudanese do with their indigenous sortabrownfolks is not really our problem. Actually, come to think of it, what happens to any sortabrownfolks (including those who are U.S. citizens) is not terribly important to the current administration.
Leading into the interview the NPR apparatchik referenced a scene from the movie, "Hotel Rwanda" where Cheadle's character told a cameraman who was filming the massaceres that he was grateful that the world would see what was going on in that country. The cameraman's reply was that he doubted that most people would do more than look at the images, make sympathetic noises and return to their dinners.
It's amazing how little of what goes on in the world is reported on by the MSM. NPR which has far fewer financial resources than the MSM does a reasonably good job (although they are not above giving a pass to the Bush WH and some big corporate donors), but they are really the only ones. It's just fucking sad.
