Oaxaca Earthquake

OAXACA gets shaken up by a 5.1 earthquake. Sounds like it was mild, but of course any earthquake news in Mexico brings up some bad memories.

Yup, I was there when that happened.

Not fun.

I can find a 4.6 for Zihuatenejo, Gro, but don't see one for Oaxaca on the Servicio Sismologico Nacional website. It may not be posted yet.

I've been through a 5.something in Mexico City (in the Zona Rosa. I was in the Sandborn's at the Hotel Geneve, and watched the chandeliers go round and round. None of the waitstaff was heading for the doors, so neither did I. The other "big one" I went through was a night, but I was in a car, and thought we'd hit some speed bumps at first, til the power went out. And, I was in Itzapalapa, which isn't as affected by the shaking. The mild ones you stop paying attention to after a while -- I got to work one morning and people were talking about the quake, that I guess I just didn't notice being on the metro at the time.

Most of the survival tales from 1985 are either so horrifying or scary, I have to pass this one along to cheer people up. A friend of mine was having trouble with his geology classes, so was in an early morning tutorial... el profe gave a great "show and tell" that day.

I was walking into the bathroom at our little guesthouse in Oaxaca today when i stopped in my tracks. I heard the blinds bumping against the glass (normal) but it was different. My friend was still in bed and said it was an earthquake. Then she made us stand in a doorway. It was really very mild and short, at least where we were. First earthquake experience for me.

kick it, ése.
