We March Again

Categorized under Frontera , New Mexican Memes , Raza | Tags: , , ,

"NO MATTER HOW HARD YA TRY YOU CAN'T STOP US NOW" goes the Rage Against the Machine song, and it fits just right today.

Those types who wished the cops "would have used real bullets" in the recent assault by the LAPD upon marchers in the May 1 May Day parade may be somewhat disappointed to hear that rather than shrink in fear, the Mexican American community (and allies) are simply planning another march! And a bigger one!

LOS ANGELES - A week after a pro-immigration rally was broken up by police using batons and rubber bullets, activists announced plans to march again next month to refocus attention on their pleas for a path to citizenship. ...

Also Tuesday, Police Chief William Bratton announced a replacement for the deputy chief who was demoted to the rank of commander and assigned to work from his home following the march.

Sergio Diaz, a 30-year department veteran who is currently assistant commanding officer for the Special Operations Bureau, will replace Cayler “Lee” Carter Jr., who was the highest ranking police official at the scene of the clash.

Rally organizers hope the planned June 24 march will exceed the crowd of about 25,000 that attended the May 1 demonstration. It ended with riot police using batons and rubber bullets to drive protesters and journalists out of MacArthur Park. ...

The melee is the focus of four separate investigations. ...

Hey, I've said it before: Mexicans (and Mexican Americans) stand up for what is right. And they ain't afraid of it, tampoco. Tell your kids.

This is awesome. I hope that this upcoming march is huge and safe.

It makes me wonder if there are any good cops in L.A. if maybe they would join in as allies. We don't have to be at war with each other. It's their choice. Everyone has a choice to be a decent person, don't they?

true, DI. a hopeful thought. i'm sure this time they will be chill, either way, knowing how many eyes will be trained on them. if that's what it takes to keep them in line, that's fine. i hope it is huge and safe, too.

Dead Inside- that is a brilliant idea, if off duty cops march with the marchers that would show some real disgust at the riot squad mobs attack. It is their chance to show real commitment to stop being the blackshirt thugs, show they can be human too, it's not all orders, loyalty, code of silence bullshit.

Well I'll commit right now to posting/mirroring any stuff you get, best I can offer as I am some few thousand miles away across a big watery thing, plus until habeas corpus is restored I ain't going near the US (and I have a kind of intelligent boycott of American produce- ie if it isn't engaged in work against the wrongs of the empire I don't support it with my meagre cash or patronage).

Oh and this piece of disturbing news (thanks in part to Clipmarks)

http://www.alternet.org/rights/51663/

* The arrest and indictment of six members of the Alabama Free Militia who, according to federal authorities, were allegedly preparing to attack Mexican immigrants near Birmingham, Ala. with grenades, semi-automatic weapons and 2,500 rounds of ammunition confiscated during a recent raid by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

* Washington, D.C., area police arrested Tyler J. Froatz Jr., a 24 year-old man wielding a gun as he allegedly attacked marchers at a local immigration rally last Tuesday. U.S. Park police say Froatz had two knives, a hammer, a flare gun, a taser stun gun and pepper spray when they captured him. A subsequent police search of Froatz's apartment yielded 15 guns, a Molotov cocktail, a grenade and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, according to authorities.

* An early morning fire last Thursday at Casa de Maryland, a day-labor center near Gaithersburg, Md. was declared an arson incident by Montgomery County fire investigators. Representatives of Casa de Maryland, which received regular hate phone calls and emails prior to the incident, were reported in The Washington Post as calling the incident a hate crime and a "natural consequence to the ongoing debate over immigration." County executive Isaiah Leggett called it "shameful and despicable."

you are right, carmen. when you hear that sentence from me, i am just pushing back against those filthy anti-mexican tropes and memes we keep underground, floating in our movies, books, politics, laws.

of course we have allies and friends and there are many in this land who believe in standing for what is right. i am glad to know you. i am glad to know you are one. see you there...maybe not, but i'll feel ya!

"natural consequence"??????

You know..I thought the same thing myself Nez. I was like "Natural?" But then I had to rethink it. Is it possible that after centuries of hate, ignorance and greed that maybe somehow it has become the very core of some peoples DNA. Now this is in no way a justification, just an example of how deep and embedded the hate has gotten. For some it becomes as easy as blinking an eye.
And of course the media itself is responsible by the very fact that they in turn report it as "natural", knowing very well that weak minded & corupt individuals would only regard it as a reinforement of their very nature, to deny responsibility and accept it as "this is the way nature intended it, therefore I am not to blame". Some people actually regard thier nature, whatever it may be, as God given.
