Envidia - Internalized Oppression Pt. 07

A man stumbles upon a fisherman who is gathering crabs and placing them in a bucket with no lid. When the passerby asks the fisherman whether he is concerned that the crabs might climb out of the bucket and crawl away, the fisherman replies that there is no need to worry. 'You see,' he says, 'these are Mexican crabs. Whenever one of them tries to move up, the others pull him down...''
The envidia phenomenon sabotages Latino unity and requires our attention. We need to challenge negative stereotypes about Latinos, refuse to perpetuate negative stereotypes about other Latinos, recognize sabotaging behavior among ourselves, and convert that behavior and the environment that promotes it into a supportive environment.

I have come across this phenomenon in my life living here in East Los. But there is a flip side to this whole thing. There many of use who do want to climb out so that we can then come back to bring a ladder and help every one get out. However, ther are a few more who want to leave and never look back. forget about the rest on the path of self interest. Now I don't have a problem with self interest as long as it don't turn to greed and selfiness to the point that we deny and reject anything that has to do with our people and our upbringing. There might be some trauma involved in there that needs to be resolved but it is forgetting none the less. So I agree with the Mexican crab metaphor but it can also be about keeping our people close to us.
