Immigration Orange has a specific example of what we often take for granted in general, but should not—those dark deeds that corporations do to get us our Juicy Fresh Daily. It has to do with Chiquita Banana and their financing paramilitaries in Colombia.
"'It's one of the first – if not the first – times that a [US-based] company is indicted and pleads guilty to providing material support to an organization known to commit widespread human rights abuses,' says Arvind Ganesan, director of the Business and Human Rights program at the New York-based Human Rights Watch.'But it's actually not a case about human rights,' he says. 'It's a unique case where terrorism is the crux of the whole thing.' The single-count indictment against Chiquita was for 'engaging in transactions with a specially designated global terrorist.'"

Man this strange journey of ours. I spend the day researching the military history of the Puerto Rico and the insurrections, abuses, political assasinations and right-wing terrorist acts (one page puts them at over 300 in the last 30 years) is staggering. The Mega-Corp/Plutocracy web of connections envelops us all.

Hey Nez,
I have more respect for you than my words can expressed. When I stumbled across this blog it was like a breath of fresh air into my soul.
Still, I'm going to have to disagree with your characterization of this one. This is not just more corporate abuse, Chiquita is the king of abuse in Latin America. I don't have to tell you about the affect United Fruit had on the region.
I am not right to see what an problem this specific case is? Recent articles on this shows just how high up Chiquita's connections go. They came to Michael Chertoff personally with this case and he let it slide, because Colombian terrorists weren't as important as middle east terrorists.
This has the potential to be blown wide open and made huge, am I wrong on this? Should we just treat this as another case? Another boycott? Another corporate abuse?
I don't think so Nez, this is something to be hit with full force. This is something that has the potential to change everything should we choose to fight it with zeal. I really think hitting this full force has the ability to change the tone of the immigration debate.

I admit I have to research your links more. I really am pressed for time lately. I hate it. I'll see your other more recent post when I can. I knew posting this I was lacking info that could have influenced a longer, more thorough and "zealous" post. But I knew I didnn't have time for it. So I thought I would post now, as I saw a friend had posted on your post and I felt bad that you were trying so hard and I wasn't posting on it. I guess I should have waited for when I had more time for it But I've been telling myself that a while already! choices! now i have to walk to the post office to help la novia who just locked herself out of the car, lata

I hear you, Nez.
It's the fate of good people to be busy. No sweat about the lack of time, I'll continue to push this and get the word out. This is something I'll be hitting hard.

One of my Colombian friends has a huge scar on his arm. I never asked him about it before, but today I was sitting next to him and class and just kind of wondered aloud... "Que te paso?" It turns out it was a bomb thrown at his house by paramilitaries trying to kill some random guy that lived by them. He was thirteen.
