FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASESEIU Condemns NC Smithfield Raid
Promise of America Sullied by Thug-Like Attacks
WASHINGTON, DC--Eliseo Medina, Executive Vice President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), issued the following statement today regarding an ICE raid of a Smithfield Foods pork slaughterhouse in Bladen County, North Carolina:
'Once again, the Bush Administration has played the bully to show its base that it is tough on enforcement. By sending dogs, guns and shackles into trailer parks to round up hardworking immigrants, ICE agents looked more like thugs than the protectors of a great nation.
The targets of this raid are among the most vulnerable members of our society. These individuals work long hours in one of the most dangerous, grueling, and underpaid jobs in the country. It is no secret that without their labor, the entire industry would fall apart. As they struggle to make ends meet and build a better life for their families, we periodically launch thug-like attacks for political reasons that belie the American Dream.
Using precious federal resources to torment hardworking immigrants is not the solution to securing our homeland. Dividing families will not fix our broken immigration system. Invading neighborhoods and worksites to seize and deport good people affected by bad laws is nothing short of disgraceful.
Our public policy must always be first informed with our humanity, fairness and the promise of America.
Our immigration problems will not go away until we find a fair and practical way to bring undocumented workers out of the shadows, and create legal channels for much-needed immigrant workers to come here in the future. The alternative - punitive attacks, family destruction, and harassment without hope - is shameful and fundamentally un-American.'"CONTACT: August 22, 2007 Ali Jost, ali.jost@seiu.org (202) 730-7159

I'm told that "there's a union organizing effort going on at Smithfield."
Coincidence?

I think these raids should be carried out in every conceivable location in the US up to and beyond the limit of available manpower and jail space.
Then when a number of industries just dry up and blow away, maybe the geniuses that are in charge of this activity will be taken to task.
Unfortunately, I have seen a similarly brain drained approach to the Iraq Occupation, and there is not nearly enough outrage about that, so maybe collapsing a few industries is not going to upset the US public that much.
I guess if it just upsets the US business class enough, that might get some intelligence working on the immigration policy knot.
Of course, the spectacular news that union organizing may be going on at these nightmarish industries is just wonderful.
The unions should be a lot busier than they have been and they must go to the new level-- WORLDWIDE organizing.
They can start with pushing for standardized policies of worldwide human movement across all borders, with the threat of massive worldwide shutdowns if not approved by all governments.
Just my world conquest delusions of the day. Sorry.

This has been a sustained effort on the part of Latin, Black and White workers. The industry is dangerous, environmentally toxic and about equally cruel to animals and humans.
