Bill Richardson Remembers he's Latino

Categorized under Política Estados Unidos , Raza | Tags: ,

I DON'T MEAN to rib our dear Governor Richardson, but vato, you comin' out late at the gate!

LAS VEGAS -- Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson started a Hispanic outreach program Thursday to try to raise his profile with a voting bloc critical to his campaign. 'Because my name is Richardson, many Latinos don't know I'm Latino,' the New Mexico governor told reporters in Spanish after a news conference announcing the effort.

He sometimes jokes about adopting his mother's maiden name: Lopez. But Richardson, who would be the first Hispanic president, is open about the truth behind the humor. As an underdog candidate who needs to run strongly in heavily Hispanic Nevada, he needs every Hispanic vote he can muster.

--Richardson Targets Hispanic Vote, WaPo

In all seriousness, this is exactly what I suggested to the women at his booth at the Ykos Convention. I told them this, verbatim. I said it was unfortunate how "Richardson could get a hold of the Latino vote...but he doesn't even exist out there. He needs to speak out as a Latino." (By "verbatim," I mean of course "more or less in these words.")

While not quite as funny as the Ask Nezua series--which, in all fairness, did NOT get me elected president--we now have the Ask Bill (en Español) series of YouTube addresses, of which here is the first. Joaquín Guerra (whom I mentioned the other day) shows us his mad Pocho Skillz as he bumbles the intro, and after that (not to mention memories of this), Richardson's use of Spanish comes across like a whiff of fresh flan.

By the way...stay tuned in the doc (and possibly the last installment of Nezua Crashes Yearlykos (2007)) for that short tale of Richardson's booth, and how much the woman there loved my special secret handshake. (And by "loved" I mean "was obviously unenthusiastic and perhaps even slightly irritated by--.")

I gotta say: as a Californian, New Mexico seems weird sometimes, what with all them blonde and blue-eyed Hispanic folks who speak less Spanish than I do, which isn't much.

Hell, the fact that in New Mexico, the word "Hispanic" isn't a marker of gringo cluelessness kinda took me by surprise at first.

My uninformed sense is that in NM, the cut-off point for "vato" is placed differently than it is where I live.

It's kind of disappointing to notice how many of the presidential candidates {R and D} can't manage to pick someone to run their campaigns properly and they themselves are not very administratively adept either. It is not just Richardson that seems to be unable to give the impression of being on the ball.
One is alarmed to think that these are the people we will have making the big decisions and the important appointments in 16 months. Or at least one of them will be.
Richardson really has some very positive planks in his platform that should appeal to enough people to get him elected, but his campaign is pretty weak and his message is not out there at all. There is still time to turn that around and even if he doesn't win, he should be out there being heard, because much of what he has to say is worth hearing and is worth projecting into the national consciousness.
This is one of those rare times when new tangents can get injected into the national debate.
He should be doing that and not flopping around in shallow pools that are drying up.

well, thanks for leaving tus comentarios, bro...i dont think its a stretch to imagine that comments left here could get back to his staff. or that they are reading this. so its good to give feedback, honest feedback on the campaign, if one cares about it.

presentation in this game is oh so much. gone are the days you could put a tube of Geritol on the screen and let it sell itself. especially in the usa, i'll tell you. we like our packaging, and we likes it to shine. (preferably with that "Not Concerned With Packaging" gloss. jeje. it's a fine line. not that Gravel had a chance (love that vato's cojones) but look at HIS YouTube disaster, ay dios mio he stared into the lens like a stalker for three minutes from an inch away WHAT IS THIS CAMURRRA. no no LOOK like you aren't obsessed with your image...but CARE about your image, foo'!)

i'm a little disappointed, too. i think he has what it takes. i think his media people and presentation people are not doing him justice. no offense to the laughing and amicable Señor Guerra, I don't only refer to his flub, but we are talking Presidential Candidate. YouTube doesn't mean keep your pajamas on. It just means low production and mostly distro costs. people still want to trust in those people at the helm, and sometimes that means trust their sense of self-image and presentation.

and the people at his booth lost me on their shoddy social engineering skills, but then again, i'm only one type of voter.

my vote doesn't count in the primary. i am not reg'd as a dem.

Nez, I live in a no vote at all zone, Puerto Rico, so I am just kind of following the race like any world citizen would.
Washington is a powerful force in the world and the ripples rock us in far away places.
We hope that the elected party has some sense of fair play and verguenza.
Under Bush, it just seems like cretins have seized control.
I have been trying to send you by scan an article in Spanish by Jose Curet about Jose Padilla and John Walker Lindh. I'll email you and see if I can fax it as I am too ignorant to figure why the HP scan won't travel through the wire to the computer.

Richardson really isn't that strange a "hispanic" name out in these parts. The whole concept of "Hispanic" -- only going back to the Nixon administration -- is still too new for us to have adopted. Out here, people still distinguish between "Spaniards" (meaning having ancestors in this part of the world before Mexican independence) and Mexicans.

There was a nice article about him in Time before all the election hoohaw started. I thought he would do well in the running. I wonder what all happened.

His father was an American banker, if I'm not mistaken. Since his dad had a bunch of money, he grew up in a very nice home in the wealthy part of Mexico City, but he was best friends with a poor kid, who his family kind of adopted and ended up paying his way through school or something like that... That's pretty much the only story about Richardson that's stuck with me. It was on "Latina Lista" some months ago. Maybe last year. (Bad memory)

kick it, ése.
