The Big One...Any Moment Now...
Categorized under Ciencia | Tags: Califas, San Andreas Fault, The Big Earthquake
THEY'RE DIGGING THIS GEM out again. It even makes me nostalgic to worry about this earthquake. This fear—that Califas will be devastated by the Big One that will tear her apart by the San Andreas Fault—was actually scrawled into my baby book in my mother's handwriting. That, along with the fact that "Rocky Raccoon" was the biggest hit of the day, and that Nixon was president.
So yeah, thirty-eight years ago, they expected the same earthquake any day.
It never gets less scary when I hear them carping on how many people would die in such a disaster. Let's just hope the Bush administration is long gone if such a horrible thing were to happen. We don't need any more cities dying under the lenses of helicopter cameras.

Must you scare me in this way???!!!
I remember the '89 earthquake. There I was lieing on the floor in the living room watching "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" when I looked over and saw my cat outside standing incredably still. My mother grabbed me and shoved me in the doorway. I thought it was sort of fun.
On a serious note: During the 1908 earthquake, Chinatown was devestated. San Fran and the feds refused to rebuild. they wanted all of the Chinese people to move out of town and to make Chinatown--prime real estate--into a white community. Finally, the Chinese Embassy got involved and haulted the plan. Chinatown (North Beach) would probably be whiter today if it had gone through.
It makes me nervous to think of the Mission District and Hunter's Point. Not the new condos in those areas but where the poor/people of color live--the places that are *not* Earthquake retrofitted. This is one of the many reasons I went to New Orleans. I can see it happening here. They would say it was a natural disaster but really they can do *a lot* to prepare for the coming Earthquake (and have prepared in the rich communities). Much like they could have completely prevented those levees from bursting......
BUt, hey, if I crumble into the ocean, there is no place I'd rather be buried in rubble than the Bay Area.

I hear that after the 1906 quake, in fact, when Chinese people from San Francisco were admitted (after some controversy) to the refugee camps in Oakland and Berkeley, they were forced to work laundering the clothing of other refugees.
