A Fruit That Poisons All of Us
Categorized under Acción , Música | Tags: Billie Holiday, Jena 6, racism, White Supremacy, YouTube
A reminder of why brandishing a noose is an act of violence in and of itself, is not something we can write off as a "prank", of why I don't personally mind so much if you get your ass beat when you bring one into play as an implied threat.
"Context," somebody said. Here's a little.
Please, if you have not already. (Now at 97% toward new goal of 300,000 signatures).

Wow, thank you. I've never heard that. But I guess it's no surprise; I bet many people have never heard that song. Most of us can't imagine the kind of suffering that leads to such passionate artistic expression. The more I learn, the more keenly aware I become of how much of our history is hidden from the people.

hidden, sometimes selectively empasized, or reframed. many powers-that-be dont want us learning certain lessons, after all. too many benefit from our ignorance or misconceptions.

thanks for posting this. i've never seen her sing that. just heard it. i can't finish it--too sad to watch. it's chilling.
they used to hang mexicans as well.
i was just listening to sam cooke's "a change is gonna come" which also gets me everytime.
yes, a noose is definately a call for a fight.
these are just jumbled thoughts.

its horrible and beautiful to watch...brings me to tears. while i wont watch saddam being hanged, or any death i can help on film, this i feel an obligation to watch, even if i wanted to turn away (not saying you SHOULD). to see her express, perform, emote something so powerul, so important for all of us to remember, so important to her. the fear she puts into her eyes, the disgust, the horror, the sadness. it truly is devastating to watch. so i can understand why someone would rather not. as long as we all remember such chapters in our heart...lest we help rewrite them in our turning away.
yes, i know mexicans were hanged too. lately i've posted a lot on blacks because the Jena Six have been on my mind, as you can see.
i've got to go scope out Sam Cooke's tune. dont know that i've heard that one.
