Liliana and her Son

"THE MOVEMENT FOR THE ILLEGALS TO GO HOME," the anti-migrant protestor says, and I am not sure, but am assuming she doesn't refer to the illegal invasion of Iraq? Or does she? What could be more illegal than killing or aiding in the death of a million people in a lied-up invasion and occupation? If so, I agree. Go home illegals! Go home and leave the good Iraqi people to use their own oil as they will!
Or...maybe those saying GO HOME ILLEGULZ refer to the people (and descendents) of the people who launched a trumped up war on Mexico's land 150 years ago or so? Is that what she means? Or do they refer to those patriots who killed so many Indians when they realized the great New World wasn't eagerly awaiting their "settling" it? Go home, illegals! Stop pretending you "discovered America," when you slaughtered and stole and lied to get this juicy land or rode on the backs of those who did so! Better start lining up those boats. A lot of us gotz to go!
Laws. They are so convenient to fear, greed, and hate, eh? And our views on humanity and kindness and Legal all seem so malleable to what we want. Yet there they stand, sure behind some wall of loathing and blessed "law."
At least there are those of us who see things in a broader, wiser, more compassionate sense. We must rise with the same passion that those moved by fear and hostility do. And we do.
More than a hundred activists from both sides of the illegal immigration debate faced off Sunday outside a church where an illegal immigrant and her U.S.-born infant son are being sheltered. The anti-illegal immigration group Save Our State, which organized the rally of about 120 protesters and counter-protesters in Simi Valley, Calif., said its members had hoped to make a citizen's arrest of the woman, who has identified herself only as Liliana.
'I'm here because I'm for the movement for the illegals to go home,' protester Dee Barrow said, according to The Associated Press.
Liliana, who lived in nearby Oxnard before taking shelter at the United Church of Christ, has been living in the church’s former parsonage as part of the New Sanctuary Movement - the effort of churches in five big U.S. cities to protect illegal immigrants from deportation, offering their buildings as sanctuary if need be.
While some have called the effort “radical hospitality,” others have called it misguided.
The faith groups 'don't seem to realize that they are being charitable with someone else's resources, and that's not charity,' said Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which favors limits on immigration.
—Protestors Rally Outside of Church to Arrest Illegal Immigrant,
Mehlman. Now, there's a name that brings up good memories. "Federation for American Immigration Reform." Bush has taught us all the Orwellian habit. And I just shake my head and wish people had the courage to call things what they are. "Federation for Walls and Throwing People Out of the Country." How about that, Ira? Or is that too close to the truth? Why don't we stop calling death "death," by the way? Let's just call each US soldier who has legs blown off by an IED "discouraged." As in "Another US Soldier was discouraged from occupying foreign land today." Will that work for you, Ira?
Ira says that we shouldn't be so damn charitable with others' resources. Hard to parse that line without a huge revolted and awed look on my face. I mean... "others'" resources? The USA's illegal war and occupation on Iraqis is killing hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq and chasing thousands and thousands and thousands of them out of their own homeland—and the USA is building massive bases and burning through the lives of US troops like kindling...and it's all for Iraq's resources. So...are you going to stop driving your car, Ira? Are you going to stop using petroleum products? Are you going to refuse to take part in the use of other people's stolen resources?
Ira is right. This out of bounds kindness and compassion for others is plain unamerican. We have to lay down very definite limits on where we help others. Too much helping will kill us. Too much taking care of other people is bound to be the ruin of us all. We need more war, more blood for oil, more lies from our government, and less helping people. Mmmmm. Sort of like the comments at that post already, where people are using biblical phrases to condemn the Sanctuary movement and migrants and the spirit of helping and caring. Just really gives you a warm feeling. Maybe that's enlightment I sense.
"Unjust laws must be broken...."

Some of us are thinking and writing about this whole unjust law and breaking them in light of reading Martin Luther King, Jr. I hope you have a chance to come by and see what we are doing. Peace.

It's a discussion in the pro-migration advocacy groups, too. After all, we could go down the line with the laws that once stood, and have since been seen as unjust. In fact, just because something is a "law" really insures it no morality at all. But that is something I've been writing for a while.
Please add your voice to the comments at that post I linked. They could use another religious person...but one who isnt using bible phrases to hate.
Keep up the good work, my friend.

King spoke against the injustices at home and abroad and linked the Vietnam war (the Imperial conflict abroad) with segregation and racism at home, showing us all that Empire's know no Rubicons.
Great post Nez, as always.
