México's Dia de la Independencia

Categorized under Corazón , Cultura , Política México , Raza , día festivo | Tags: , , ,

THIS IS THE DAY TO SHOUT and let that Mexican@ pride ring out. The revolution that drove the Spaniards and colonial rule from Mexico was long (ten years), and bloody, and complicated, many factions of the people having different agendas and levels of participation and reward. (As Marcos has said In Mexico, there are movements, there are revolutions and change, but for the indigenous nothing changes.)

But today we celebrate el corazón and el fuego that lives in all of us and that brought those different people together to oust their conquerors and occupiers. Mexico has a long, long history of oppression, and today those closest to the soil and the history of Mexico still live under that oppression. But the age old battle goes on, every day, in all of us. Let all us Mexican@s and Xican@s join in this pride and remembrance, for every bit of heart and strength that made such an unexpected uprising to take place lives on in all of us, en nuestra sangre, en nuestra historias, en nuestra familias, y en todos nuestro corazones!

So let tu grito sound out and shake the sky itself!

Each year on the eve of September 16, when the President of the Republic of Mexico has rung the church bell that once hung in the belfry at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in the small town of Dolores Hidalgo, he has once more proclaimed Independence Day. When Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang that same bell on September 16, 1810, he rang it to call his people to arms. The call became known as "El Grito de Dolores."

¡Que viva México!

sombrero tip to the latin americanist for the vid, who rightly reminds me that i must include Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua!
