Mychal Bell Freed on Bail

MYCHAL BELL, of the Jena 6, has been freed on bail.
JENA, La. (AP) - A black teenager whose prosecution in the beating of a white classmate prompted a massive civil rights protest here walked out of a courthouse Thursday after a judge ordered him freed. Mychal Bell's release on $45,000 bail came hours after a prosecutor confirmed he will no longer seek an adult trial for the 17-year-old. Bell, one of the teenagers known as the Jena Six, still faces trial as a juvenile in the December beating in this small central Louisiana town."We still have mountains to climb, but at least this is closer to an even playing field," said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped organize last week's protest.
"He goes home because a lot of people left their home and stood up for him," Sharpton said.
We can turn that last line over in our hands and hearts, it is encouraging. We've all seen a lot of passion and action taking place online, and we've seen it in the streets. So we can make a difference in these things.
Of course this is just bail. They can put Bell away for four years in juvie if found guilty, even as a youth. And of course, we are still talking about huge issues, of which the Jena 6 incident is but a symptom. They will not be resolved in the outcome of this case. That is a job we all take on every day.

I'm so glad Mychal is free from prison. But I also worry about him -- even at my age it would freak me out to have so much media attention, so many expectations of me. I hope his friends and family are able to shelter him (and each other!) from as much of this as they can. I do not trust the traditional media - they will eat him alive if allowed; all they care about is ratings.
