Nuestro Sueños - Our Dreams
Categorized under Acción , Frontera | Tags: Change, Hope, The Dream Act
YOU'VE READ A POST here and there on this blog about the D.R.E.A.M Act, usually as related to my friend Jose. Those posts referred to the California DREAM act, but there is a Federal DREAM Act, too. The Federal DREAM Act does not offer instate tuition in any form, but it does give "students conditional permanent residency and a pathway to citizenship" according to reader Rox, who has asked me to post on this. I am all too happy to follow her wishes on this.
It’s time for the Senate to exercise leadership for immigrant students who can’t continue their higher education and career goals without the American DREAM Act. We need a victory for the immigrant community; we need this legislation THIS year! [...] Also, simply fill out the form below to send them an email. Let's flood their phone lines and inboxes.

For those who need a reminder, this nation was and is made of migrants with dreams. We have come from all over the world. Let's not play "I Gots Mine, Now Get Lost."
As Rox writes, the Senate has already introduced the DREAM Act, but so far it has been almost entirely the opposition calling and calling and calling their representatives. She tells me that for every one call the pro-migrant community makes, they make five. This is the power of fear and hate in action. We know about the "fightbuzz," we know how easy it is to fall into negativity. Sadly, it is a very radioactive and busy energy. Haters read this blog, too, you know. So lets overpower them this time. Let the power of giving and the power of fearlessness and sharing be strong in us. As mi amiga Theriomorph has said, let us approach these changing times from a model of Abundance, and not one of Scarcity. Please, if you have time and the interest, do what you can. Thank you.

My Neanderthal senators aren't likely to vote for the Dream Act (at least, that was the impression I got from the polite brush-off when I called their offices (no reply to my e-mails). Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson are pretty squarely opposed to this, and I don't think they're likely to move.
So for those of us residing in solidly red states -- what are some other ways we can help to move the Dream Act along?

Tomas,
I'd say keep calling, and writing your reps. And have all your friends do the same. If the haters are calling 5 times...we should too.
Also, if time allows, you might organize some kind of event through a college or high school in your area. Maybe it would get some press -- sometimes it takes a public event for local press to address something like this.
P.S.
A good read is "Unauthorized Youths and Higher Education: The Ongoing Debate" by Dawn Konet at www.migrationinformation.org (via info. I found at immigration orange's Web site). She talks about the issue in-depth.

damn im sorry tomas, i didnt realize i had left you unanswered.
i agree with mimi. of course they are going to be brush-offy in a "red" state. that's because they feel there are too few voices like yours an dmine.
honestly, i think Ye Olde Handwritten Letter is a very strong seller. of course we cant send out multiples of those. but we could pull a "get one other person to write a letter," and if we did that, well...it could add up.
great ideas por mimi, también.
