Statement of the Fair Immigration Reform Movement

"Racism is real in America. The case of six black Louisiana teenagers receiving unequal justice because of the color of their skin has shocked this nation and has given rise to a new movement. Unfortunately, this blatant injustice is an all too familiar occurrence in the lives of people of color. As immigrants, we understand the sting of racism and live with it every day.

"Racism sickens the soul of our American community. When any of us can be treated more harshly by the American justice system because of the color of our skin - none of us should remain silent.

"The Fair Immigration Reform Movement stands in solidarity with the families of the Jena Six and with the movement for justice that has sprung up around them. Those black teenagers in Jena were treated by elected officials and the courts as though they deserved only some fraction of the justice due to a white teenager. Immigrant families from coast to coast share a deep understanding of what that kind of racism feels like.

"We recognize that our fates are intertwined. Until we understand that all of us - black, white, Latino, Asian and all people who make up the fabric of our society - are bound together, our nation will continue to fall apart. We as immigrants salute the work of those marching in Jena and look forward to working with them to build a more just America which honors our community values."

Nice to read a statement like this one. Thanks for passing it on to those of us who are desperately looking for reasons to think the US might be reaching a turning point and heading back to some kind of sanity and justice.

Hey Nezua - Long time lurker here. I apologize for being so off-topic, but when I read that the Department of Justice presented Ex Atty General Gonzales a statue of four nineteenth-century Texas Rangers as a parting gift I just had to let you know. I don't know if I'm insulted or simply dumbfounded.

The entire transcript of the farewell ceremony for Gonzales is available at http://www.usdoj.gov/ag/speeches/2007/ag_speech_070917.html. I have copied and pasted me favorite statement below.

+++++++++++++

MR. SUTTON: Thank you so much, Craig.

It is truly an honor to have a minute or two to speak on behalf of the United States Attorneys about Judge Gonzales. I didn't bring the gift that we gave to Judge Gonzales last night, but the United States Attorneys had dinner with him last night and we did give him a gift. It wasn't a book. It was a statue of four Texas Rangers riding their horses at full speed with their guns in the air, shooting them off, which we felt was very fitting for us, a real Texan like Al Gonzales.

We *need* the contributions of all our people to vitalize and strengthen our society. And we all have to accept each other, and give each other space and room to grow.

Justice can't be parceled out simply on the basis of race; the disenfranchised will not support it and will eventually knock down those institutions that do.

For an object lesson, see South Africa.

kick it, ése.
