Finalist - MTV Choose or Lose '08

WELL, if you've been following my MTV adventure, I finished the phone interview this morning (which I accidentally set up for 07:30, forgetting MTV's HQ are in NYC) and that seemed enjoyable, so I imagine it went well. Or maybe that good feeling is leftover warm fuzzies from the visions of "peripherals" and camera gear and flavorful Adobe® software treats Ms. Nord was dangling before me. Mmmm.
So it was good to learn that the weekly vlog/blog/collage entries I would give them (were I to get the gig) don't have to be on national politics or the Presidential campaign, but can be local interest/state interest topics. Which is really wild because I'd have the chance to put national focus on local issues that I feel are important, and worthy of notice. And there's really a wide array of issues I can dress up for, when it comes down to it. And still match.
"I think as a nation, we need to focus more on the art of wine-tasting at the Oregon vineyards." (Sorry, just practicing.)
To those tuning in, the Choose or Lose dealio is not an application to be a VJ, the contest is to pick one person from each state to submit reports/vlog/blog-foto entries once a week for a year, until we reach the Presidential elections, at which point, well. We explode with happiness. Anyway, I'm down to one of three finalists vying to rep Oregon. All that is left after that phone interview is a 1-4 minute film on a local issue. I've got some ideas, turning it over. I was thinking about doing the ole "Spy-cam Reaction Shots of People Walking Past Underwear With Melted Snickers Bar in Them," but that may be too "inside-the-beltway." No, I think I'll have to whip out something a smidge less sophisticated for this crowd. (After all, this is the bunch telling me they loved this piece.)
I love that moment where you feel like a beauty queen under the glare facing a mic or something. "Do you have anything else to add? REMEMBER: This is your last chance to let us know about you! Any questions?"
Since I hadn't warmed up enough to properly finesse the higher notes in You've Lost That Loving Feeling, I skipped the usual response. Nor did it feel like the right moment to find out if they would fly me First Class when it was time to meet up with the other lucky 49 during our orientation in the Big Apple. First Class is my latest obsession, since experiencing it a few weeks ago. I have to keep a lid on it.
Anyway, barring that, I played it cool and said I hoped my work would speak for itself. "Work." I think I actually said that. I crack myself up. Funny YouTube videos as "my work." I really have to stop telling people excitedly that I was born on the same day as Michaelangelo. It's just plain embarrassing. (Though true.)
