Los Incendios

Categorized under Planeta | Tags: ,

SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL memories I have of the state in which I was born and lived for a few years of my youth are in San Diego. And while I've been hearing dire predictions of disasters such as the coast "breaking off and falling into the ocean" ever since I was a child, I feel wounded in knowing so much devastation is going on in my home state today, and to so many gente. I've heard from a few amig@s who live there, friends have sent me progress reports on their particular areas.

Malibu:

The last time the fires were this bad was in 1993. I had just moved from LA and was back in NYC. We are certainly better prepared this time. [...] The road by my home PCH is closed now and the area has no power so food will be ruined, but so what. [...] So lucky and thankful.

Long Beach:

so far so good. i was actually at the hollywood animals ranch when the 'Buckweed fire' started in Canyon Country. We saw the smoke coming over the hills and they were in an alert mode incase it started advancing in their direction as they'd have to evacuate all the animals. not only that but they had a M. Night Shyamalan movie shoot Mon/Tues so film guys were showing up to grab their equipment incase of the fire. so far though that fire has been moving in the other direction. keep your fingers crossed though.

as far as our house, we're not that near to any of them. but it still smells like smoke and smoke is all you can see on the horizon in practically any direction. let's hope the wind stops today.

"East of the big Castaic fire":
I'm very close to the fires. I've been on the phone checking on friends in the neighborhood. Fortunately, it's burning towards the ocean and not back to the desert. The wind are incredible, I'm lucky the electricity is still on. There are broken pine needles and dead birds everywhere. Our house is at a high elevation so the wind is fierce. What a mess.

I've got to "stand by" until tomorrow. I just heard a guy on the news say that the fires may burn until they reach the ocean. Some places in Santa Clarita are gone.

And of course, other reports on the last entry.

If you have local news, please let la cybernetic comunidad know things are going. I leave you with words by reader el azote, taken from a previous thread:

Y a proposito, quisiera exprimir mi apoyo a todos que ahora sufren en los incendios que estan devastando el Sur de California. Tenga fuerza, sus amigos estan consigo, todo la gente esta unido conjunto con Ustedes!

Keep the faith, take strength, peoples. Know we are with you.

What a lovely post about such an unlovely phenomenon. Thanks for the reminder about Mexican firefighters helping out. I haven't been paying as much attention as I should because I find the notion of our home, in the deepest sense of "opr home," burning with a ferocity that seems both new and frightening, like so much of what we're living through these days. It helps to know that people like you are with us here at the barricades.

My sister and her husband live near Running Springs, which is under mandatory evacuation. I'm a little concerned as they're not answering their cell phones. They have five children and one on the way.

It so cool to read about the Mexican fire fighters, it reminds us we are all in this together.
I posted at length over on our blog about the fire and the politics of the fire, but more important is a map that was published this morning, it's a pdf file, and it's detailed.
I live in La Mesa and a lot must burn before the fire comes near, still it's a lot of suffering here in the city.
The damage is so extensive that everyone in the city knows someone whose house was lost or damaged in the fire. It's bad.
So far we are OK, thanks for sending us good vibes.
