Adenovirus 14
Categorized under Ciencia | Tags: Adenovirus 14, Public Health
WE'RE BEING WARNED of a virus. Spreads like the common cold, but kills like a fatal disease. The article stresses (twice in two paragraphs and rather redundantly) the fact that this time it's not just the elderly and the young who should be scared; it's everyone.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A new and virulent strain of adenovirus, which frequently causes the common cold, killed 10 people in parts of the United States earlier this year and put dozens into hospitals, U.S. health officials said on Thursday.A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report detailed cases of people ill in May of 2006 and from March to June of 2007 with a strain of the virus called adenovirus 14 in New York, Oregon, Washington state and Texas.
"Whether you're a healthy young adult, an infant or an elderly person, this virus can cause severe respiratory disease at any age," said John Su, who investigates infectious diseases for the CDC and contributed to the report.
"What makes this particular adenovirus a little different is that it has the capability of making healthy young adults severely ill. And that's unusual for an adenovirus, and that's why it's got our attention," Su said in a telephoneinterview.
Two of the 10 people who died from the new strain were infants, Su said. The CDC report said about 140 people were sickened by the virus and more than 50 hospitalized, including 24 admitted to intensive care units. [...]
The first case described in the report was that of an infant girl in New York City who died in May 2006. Seven other people died in Oregon, including an infant. And a patient with AIDS died in Washington state.
Go, Oregon. Represent?
What an odd virus. Eight people dead in 1.5 years. In four different states? But from the same virus. Puzzling.

Hello, I do not speak much english. Since you are also Mexican, Espanol speaking, why do you not also write things in espanol? Many bilingual sites post all things once in eglish, then once in spanish. It would be much help.

Enrique, I'm very sorry. Actually, I speak only a little Spanish. But on the front page of the site, there is a button you can use to translate the site to Spanish. (The button is under the image of the black/white/red eagle, and under the "search" button, too.) The translation is not perfect, but maybe this will help some? I hope so. Meanwhile, I wil try to get better at my Spanish. Either way, thank you for your message, my friend. Thank you for reading.

This virus has killed a couple of kids in basic training here in San Antonio so the CDC cannot be technically accused of lying, since all the victims are currently dead, but their statement is definitely shifty.

Captain Tripps, anyone?
I live in Tejas, and it does seem to be a problem. We thought it was weird that a lot of folks were getting colds already. Allergies are a big prblem here, but this seems different

When people says "illegal aliens" I think of flying saucer pilots getting speeding tickets. The phrase itself is painful just because it erases the humanity personness of those described that way. People aren't illegal, and aliens are bug-eyed monsters in SF films.
There were a lot of news stories about the Tabasco flooding that indicated a "fear of disease outbreak," which sounded more like xenophobia-justifying spin than a real danger. Or rather, it it was a danger from Tabasco, it would've been a danger from NOLA, and that didn't get much air time.

Next time look up in the sky on a pretty day. Remember the contrails dissapearing behind the plane after a few minutes when you were a kid. Now those same things only called "chemtrails" are carrying biological agents infecting and testing on North Americans paid by you.
