Bronze is Beautiful, Not Criminal

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Department of Homeland Security will investigate a Halloween costume party hosted by a top immigration official and attended by a man dressed in a striped prison outfit, dreadlocks and darkened skin make-up, a costume some say is offensive, the department's secretary said.

Julie Myers, head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and host of the fundraising party, was on a three-judge panel that originally praised the prisoner costume for 'originality.' [...]

A department photographer photographed Myers with the man, but the images were deleted after the costume were deemed offensive, ICE spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said. [...]

Nantel said one employee, whom she declined to identify, was wearing a black-and-white striped prison outfit, dreadlocks and a skin 'bronzer' intended 'to make him look African-American.' But, she said, it was not immediately apparent that he was wearing the make-up.

'Most people in the room didn't realize he was wearing make-up at all,' she said. [...]

'There were a couple of people who were offended," Nantel said. "When it was confirmed through a conversation with the employee that he was wearing make-up," Nantel said, the employee was counseled and Myers sent out a note to employees apologizing.

In a November 2 email to ICE employees, Myers wrote, 'It is now clear that, however unintended, a few of the costumes were inappropriate and offensive. While we were all thrilled to be a part of the CFC fundraising effort, I and the senior management at ICE deeply regret that this happened.'"

Immigration chief apologizes for 'offensive' costumes at her party

A WORD on the larger point, and some advice for those who want to show up at costume parties as criminals: you don't really need to reach into the typical age-old and utterly exhausted filmscape's stereotypes to assume the guise of a lawbreaker, criminal, or unsavory and illegal type. Dig Libby, dig Bush, dig Dahmer, dig Scott D Clark, Tom Ledgerwood, Charles Martin, Zachary Bowen, Jim Gibbons, John Forney, Edwards McMellon, Sean Carroll, Kenneth Boss, Richard Murphy, Justin A. Volpe—or many many others!

When "crooking" up, be original, Euro-pink partygoers! Plus, this way, there's no need to put on sticky makeup or do more than don a tie and crisp shirt, most of the time. Less work to prepare. More time to socialize. Shake that booty.

i see it simply as embedded white supremacist values, most of us have absorbed a lot of them. it's la cultura here. sad part is it doesnt take a "fascist." just someone who grew up in the USA.

I think there's also something disturbing about members of an institution who enforce state power to dress as the powerless they prey on. Especially with the number of incarcerated and the number of custody deaths. But then again taste or sensitivity are not high on the skillset list for govt. agents.

Yes RickB. The implication in their excuse is that it would have been perfectly acceptable if it had really been a person of color (although it's hard to believe they didn't know who/what they were looking at) parading in fake dreadlocks and a prisoner's outfit.

Thanks for highlighting this, Nez.

Agree with all, especially with Nez's point about simpler costuming. :)

Counseling, and a note of apology to the offended. Gosh what wonderfully innocent times we live in.

Question that I keep asking everybody: what the HELL is a "discriminatory" costume?

RACE -- CHERTOFF CLAIMS 'ZERO TOLERANCE' FOR DISCRIMINATORY HALLOWEEN COSTUME, EXCUSES MYERS'S ROLE: Julie Myers, head of Homeland Security's immigration division, has come under intense criticism for awarding "Most Original Costume" to an employee "who dressed in prison stripes, dreadlocks and dark makeup for a Halloween gathering at the agency." Myers was part of a three-judge panel that awarded the prize. Yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff appeared on MSNBC and said that he had put the employee who wore the costume on "administrative leave." He added that he has "zero tolerance" for discriminatory acts. But when it came to Myers, Chertoff refused to condemn her and indicated that she would face no punitive action: "Assistant Secretary Myers apologized for the fact that the incident occurred." Speaking to the AP, Chertoff also excused Myers's actions, stating that she "was kind of caught by surprise by this." "I know she's mortified," he added, "but I think she's doing what she needs to do at the moment." Myers is married to Chertoff's former chief of staff, John F. Wood, who is currently a U.S. attorney in Missouri. She is also the niece of former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Richard B. Myers. The agency has destroyed at least one photo of Myers with the costumed employee and has refused to let CNN see other pictures from the party.

see, i didnt know they were awarded "most original costume" when i did my post. i just found out today. this is what i wrote to a list i'm on:

by now we know how it all works, but MOST ORIGINAL COSTUME????

when i wrote my post i didnt even scan that little nugget. i mean all notions of racism and idiocy aside...HOW is dressing up as a dark-skinned crminal the most original costume? how do you get less original than digging up old racist memes? hunh. i'm honestly baffled. i guess you could win that award in that crowd by dressing as a potato.

kick it, ése.
