No Matter How Hard Ya Try, Ya Can't Stop Us Now

Categorized under Medios , Signs of the Sixth Sun | Tags: , ,

These intellectual challenges to mainstream and other viewpoints are some of the opinions Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander-American, and black bloggers are exposing on a growing number of sites focused on social, political, and cultural issues. The sometimes facetiously named blogs range from Angry Asian Man to The Angry Black Woman. Readers can find Latino viewpoints at Guanabee, The Unapologetic Mexican, or Latino Pundit. Those interested in information from an Asian angle head to Ultrabrown, Zuky, or Sepia Mutiny. Sites created by blacks include The Field Negro, Too Sense, and Resist Racism. But often these bloggers discard the handcuffs of their ethnic origins to tackle subjects affecting a range of racial or ethnic groups.

These sites - many of which launched in the past year, although a few are older - have become places where people of color gather to refine ideas or form thoughts about race relations, racial inequities, and the role pop culture has in exacerbating stereotypes. The writers often bring attention to subjects not yet covered by mainstream media.

This is nice. :) I'm so thankful to have found people who are angry enough to write about it on-line. I just hope that we can increase participation and continue educating others who might ignore the issues that we blog about with our efforts.

"handcuffs of their racial origins" ?? It's not the "origins" that apply the handcuffs!

That said, it's good to see all those great sites getting recognition, including our host, Señor Xolagrafik-Jonez!

i cant believe that line, seriously. i dont know if i've ever heard a worse snippet of writing, a more degrading compliment.

Wow, great publicity for the site, Nezua. I suppose you will be getting a flood of trolls, though.

Yeah, the handcuffs of your origins -- very bad metaphor for saying the bloggers listed here are not ethnocentric. (I'm assuming that's the conclusion they're trying to reach, but that metaphor raises so many questions and ghosts when referring to POC.)

Anyway...I KNOW FAMOUS PEOPLE WHERE'S MY MERIT BADGE

Handcuffs! My phenotype, ancestry, and culture are handcuffing me!

Yeah that's a crazy line. When I read it I just thought, See that right there is what's wrong with you mainstream people, you imagine handcuffs where there are none! As long as you give a shit and take the time to listen and learn, you can actually write about....anything!

Thanks for the post, Nez, and the ROTM title...and thanks for the enthusiasm, Joan, you're like a proud surrogate mom except white and a much spicier writer. ;-)

i hate to find the grain of blindness or tonedeafness in it. it is great that we were cited, and just that there is something changing online. but equating one's ethnicity with slavery...i can see how it got dropped in as a general placeholder for a related thought, but maybe that is a metaphor that should not have survived the last edit.

anyway! felicidades!

"you're like a proud surrogate mom except white and a much spicier writer"

hee. I especially like the much spicier writer part. and then I almost commented anonymously to add "except white and much spicier and *way too young-looking*."

:-P

Nez, yeah, it's still a positive article on the whole, just a bad turn of phrase. Replace "handcuffs of their ethnic origins" with something like "conventional silos of ethnic politics" and it's fixed. But whatever, so it goes. Actually the Globe spoke to three of my NYC brown happy hour compadres, Carmen, Manish, and Baratunde (who got his pic in the paper), so I figure they might've plugged us.

Kai dijo:

Joan, well the part about being way too young-looking goes without saying! That's implicitly included in the spicy part! ;-)

Well deserved for both you and Kai! Of course it's presented using la lente blanca, but nowadays it's amazing that they're paying attention at all.

It IS, as has been noted, a postive article. Not only for what it says, or tries to say, even with an unfortunate turn of phrase, but below that, is a basic awareness on the part of the author, (and don't forget the editor!) that the MSM is being challenged by thoughtful insightful (inciteful?) critics. Ok, it is Boston, Mass.........not excactly the cradle of conservatism, but it is a start. The next step, one to really look for and celebrate, is for the daily papers to post blogtopian responses to the drivel being fed to them by the government feeds (and the feeds of their hired Madison Avenue promoters)
It will happen. It only takes a few brave energetic reporters, some gutsy editors, and news can again become a source of information.
For now, I can only smile and hope for more.

That's funny. The first time I saw that CNN graphic I thought you were covered on there too! It took me a while to get it was fake.

RC dijo:

GRVTR

Well the CNN coverage as well as the Fox Coverage is often fake no matter what the story, but at least we know that Nez is for real, covered or not.
