They're Always Thinking of Us

I AM DUTY-BOUND to report that although it's true that Zahara, one of Brad and Angelina Jolie's adopted children, has been removed by adoption from her home land of Ethiopia, now her parents have provided something almost as good. An island in Dubai shaped just like Ethiopia!
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have bought a man-made island in the shape of Ethiopia that is part of an ambitious luxury development off the coast of Dubai, a newspaper reported today. The Hollywood power couple intend to use the reclaimed piece of land to showcase environmental issues and encourage people to live a greener life, the Emirates Today newspaper said.
The couple's purchase is part of cluster of 300 islands, shaped like a world map, that is gradually surfacing in waters off the booming Gulf emirate.
Encourage me, Oh Brad and Angelina! Encourage me! Thank you so much for buying these islands. I can't tell you how much I'm encouraged to live a greener life. Green like Benjamin, that is.
I don't know. The line about "gradually surfacing" is kind of slipped in there. What does that mean? Sea level is rising everywhere except in Dubai? Is this sort of development the first visible sign that will later be a huge wave of rich people securing themselves from the global environmental disasters that are bound to visit all those who cannot afford such means? All I can say is that I better get rich quick so I can do my part to encourage the rest of you.
sombrero tip to Hanna and the Angry Arab News Service (Sounds like the name of a children's book that will be read on future island colonies...)

Hehehe I hear you 'mano, this is way too ridiculous for words. Unfortunately I've heard that in Dubai and Qatar there's this trend of literally building fancifully-shaped islands in the sea; you know, dumping boulders and beams into the water, rattling them into settling, pouring footings and foundations, building luxurious resorts on top of it all..."surfacing", yeah. In Hong Kong they keep expanding the island to erect new buildings (cutting off the previous waterfront view!), but at least that's actual urban development on a crowded island, whereas this Dubai thing is pure over-the-top "I'm so goddamn rich I have the power to reshape the Earth just for fun" type of thing. But the idea of Jolie-Pitt buying one in the shape of Ethiopia in order to encourage environmentalism, I dunno, it just sounds too far-fetched to be real, ya know?! Plus I thought that according to my grocery store check-out-stand they're on the fritz! Oh you just hate Angelina Jolie, don't you?!

I can't believe you...attacking this poor white couple for making an expenditure so ridiculous that even repeating the story without commentary could be mistaken for vicious sarcasm.

Buying a man-made island to make a statement in favor of environmentalism is just scary ridiculous. I think its kinda like buying a nuclear warhead as a way to make a statment in favor of ending hunger. Why don't you just use the money to buy some fucking food!!

Oh, was going to say something about the resulting environmental impact of building an island...hypocracy, etc. and then just couldn't stop laughing over what NLinStPaul said.

This kinda makes Brad's 'environmental' work in New Orleans a bit insincere

For a second, I thought it was satire - but I read Nezua's post about how Angelina was like a female Kirk yesterday, which may have altered my perceptions slightly.
Also, that picture of the artificial archipelago - that's like, the entire Earth, done as islands?
Also, if I wanted to use my money to showcase environmental issues, I wouldn't buy an expensive resort island. I'd put that money into environmental stuff, like developing cleaner energy and working on ways to minimize existing pollution - results-based, rather than theme park-based.
