Carcinogen Found in LA Drinking Water

Categorized under Planeta | Tags: , ,

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two reservoirs that supply drinking water to parts of the city have been shut down and will be drained after a rare sunlight and chlorine reaction tainted the water with a cancer-causing chemical, utility officials said Friday.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power plans to drain 600 million gallons from the reservoirs, the Elysian and the Silver Lake, early next year, said a water department spokesman, Joseph Ramallo. The reservoirs will be out of use for three to four months amid drought conditions.

High levels of the carcinogen bromate were found in early October by a commercial customer who ran a laboratory test, officials said. The utility confirmed the finding, immediately removed the reservoirs from service and notified the Department of Public Health.

Officials emphasized that the chemical is dangerous only after long-term consumption.

Reservoirs Closed After Carcinogen Is Found

IT'S GETTIN' harder and harder to stay healthy. Damn. Toxins in the toys, in our air, in our cell-phones, in our food, in our deodorant, and in our water! It's almost as if we don't want to stay on the planet a day longer than we have to.

Unless the water I get is filtered through a 1 micron fiber filter and a 10 micron carbon block, or comes bottled from a reliable source I NEVER drink it. I have been a plumber for over 30 years. Need I say more?

rc could you give an example of a 1 micron filter??

A 1 micron filter is a very common fiber weave or even paper pack filter that prefilters water and removes dirt, fine silt {red mud from rivers}and even items like cryptosporidium that are larger than 1 micron. Then, the water next passes to the carbon block filter that can only filter to 10 microns {a larger object} but the carbon holds the carcinogens, chlorine, and other gases and liquids that react with or or trapped by the carbon.
The 1 micron filter keeps the dirt and bacteria and cysts out of the carbon block.
The Brita and the PUR pour through systems are not carbon block -- they are granular, thus they are subject to channelling inside the media and thus their purification capabilities are very limited.
Most carbon block and fiber combo systems require some degree of serious water pressure to push the water through the filters.
I engineer systems that I buy components for. The filters I use most often are 5 inches wide and 20 inches high. Yes, that's right, I buy and assemmble my own components. The store units are usually much too small and clog up very quickly, and the WORST OF ALL POSSIBLE choices for a filter is any pyramid scheme operation as the filters cost three times what they should and again, they are not engineered for your particular location and they are too small.
Hope this info helps and happy drinking!
Incidently, I was only drinking bottled water way back in the late sixties and everyone made jokes about me. Long ago I had the last laugh.

kick it, ése.
