las flores y las plumas

Categorized under Literatura , Poesía | Tags: ,

we opened
the doors
of our homes
to greet them
they came in
& evicted us
we showed them
the open green
of our valleys
the clear blue
of the sky
they cut down
the forests
for their furnaces
for their crosses

we gave them
all the fruits
of this land
they poisoned
with silvery
mercury
our rivers
our veins
but we survived
the slaughter
of our days
now we face them
in this final
battle
for our lives

desert
give us
your endurance
mountains
grant us
your strength
wind
blow us
some courage
madre agua
guide us
in your flowering
& victorious
ways
brothers
& sisters
don't be afraid
the flowers
the feathers
are
on our side

Thank you so much for this poem. I have known Francisco for many years--met him at Stanford (1974?) and had great times with him (and your dad). I lost contact some time ago, but have always loved his poems. I can hear his voice here now. This is a wonderful gift. His words bring solace to my raging heart.

Thank you once again. Love and peace to you and yours.
