Nezua Named MTV's Street Team '08 Rep for Oregon!

Categorized under Artivism , Blogando , Chronicles of Nezua , Medios , Palabras , Política Estados Unidos | Tags: , , , , , , ,

SOME OF MY regular readers (I do not, at this point, necessarily refer to the bran-eating amongst us, though they are a well-stirred crew, I'm sure) remember the day back in August I casually (you should have seen me, I was sipping a mint julep as I typed) posted on the MTV Choose or Lose '08 Vlogger competition. Others came to this ongoing Chronicle of Nezua when I created a short video auditioning to represent Oregon for the 2008 Presidential Media Hellfest Cycle (that is the proper name, qué no?). And still others joined our Videolicious adventure when I was named one of the three finalists for my state.

Well, I'm sure you can tell I am not winding up this big delivery to announce that I lost! So here is the day I say ¡Órale vatos! for I am now officially operating as the Oregon Street Team Vlogging Citizen Journalist Beauty Queen. Or will be from January 7 to mid-November of '08, at which point I will accept the inevitable invitation to model the next iteration of the iPhone. Anyway, all blushing and preening aside, I am very excited about the larger platform and greater exposure, and I plan to use it to bring as many gorgeous pixels to as many computer and television screens as I can, perhaps sandwiching a few factoids in there as well. Please see me as your personal man on the inside. Of Oregon, too. And who will be sending moss-scented missives out through the mighty mouth of MTV Vloggerland. In fact, if you live in Oregon and have local news, please get in touch. (And Nike, can't you see my face on a sneaker, come on! WRITE MUH PEEPLES! We'll call it the "Sweatshop Stomper," no? We can make it out of hemp. COME BACK!!!)

The presidential candidates can run, but it will be hard for them to hide from the horde of citizen journalists tapped by MTV's Choose or Lose '08 to cover the race for the White House.

A group of 51 youth reporters — one from each state and Washington, D.C. — will follow the 2008 elections and deliver weekly multimedia reports tailored for mobile devices.

Using short-form videos, blogs, animation, photos and podcasts, the reports will be distributed through MTV Mobile, Think.MTV.com, more than 1,800 sites in The Associated Press' Online Video Network and a soon-to-launch Wireless Application Protocol site. The Street Team '08 reporters were carefully selected after an extensive nationwide search, and they represent every aspect of today's youth audience — from seasoned student-newspaper journalists to documentary filmmakers, the children of once-illegal immigrants and community organizers.

They are conservative and liberal, from big cities and small towns, but all are tied together through a passion for politics and a yearning to make the youth voice heard during this pivotal election. The correspondents will begin reporting early next month after an intensive MTV News orientation in New York, during which they'll be armed with laptops, video cameras and cell phones and challenged to uncover the untold political stories that matter most to young people in their respective states.

MTV's Choose Or Lose Taps Young Reporters To Cover Presidential Election

And I get to be "young" again, too! Damn. Free software, camera, laptop, gear and youth, too! Just for being a bigmouth. Oh, if only certain high school administrators could see me now.

(At the above link my full given name was used, but all my videos will continue to be signed using "Nezua." I inquired about this name thing, but my email was not answered. Perhaps it didn't go through.) SO—during the first week of January all state reps ("v-reps"?) will be flown to Manhattan, and the 51 of us (52, including D.C.'s rep? and don't forget to say hello to amigo Kyle, our Massachusetts Street Team Rep) will mix it up in the MTV studios, and enjoy legal orientation ("hide your MTV badge when sneaking into campaign headquarters" and such, I imagine) and program orientation for THREE DAYS (I'm seeing a sort of glossy, Times Squarish boot camp situation) before flying back home with our new laptop, camera, and software packages and getting down to fight the good v-fight.

[edited]

2008 promises to be quite a year for a few reasons, and I took a walk this morning while the sky was still beautifully black at 5 am or so to talk to the universe about it (and buy coffee at the 7-11).

Words cannot hope to express what I feel behind all of this. But I'll leave it at "mad-excited and ready to get down."

Okay. End credits. At this point, it is only fair to add that while it is very thrilling that I am getting paid to do my art/filmmaking/documenting/reporting, I am getting paid to do this by Viacom. So let that stand for the record, and tho I will not recuse myself from blogging/vlogging on any issue whatsoever, it must be remembered that on certain issues there is bound to be some conflict as I would rather not lose my platform and weekly check. But again, you can count on me to have the same bias toward telling the truth that I do my best to engage, and have, since this blog's conception. We'll talk more after the onslaught of legal orientation that (I am guessing) awaits me in Manhattan. If anyone tries to curtail too much what I feel is important to talk about, it may be a shorter gig than expected. Watch this page.

A final nota. I am finishing up all arte/web design projects I can by December's end, because 2008 is going to require my attention and energies be carefully focused. To that end, I am taking on no more web design projects. Also, the world famous The Unapologetic Mexican blog will continue, but I am also writing now at my arte/video/freeform-verse/thought blog, The House of Nezua. (Watch that page, too.) It's a more casual, non political vibe, where you can catch up on more personal glimpses into La Vida de Nezua.

Bueno! Thanks for reading along. See ustedes in videoland!

Awesome!! ¡Felicidades! The emphasis on "youth" cracked me up, too; I'm not young, and you're más viejito que yo. But, hey, age is only a state of mind when it comes to these things. Can't wait to see your work on this project, it will blow peoples' minds.

manny, gracias bro. your support means and always has meant a lot.

gracias janna. jeje, verdad...pienso en un importante manera, tho, i remain young, in that sense that it is the young who still think the impossible can be done, and who have the energy and hope to engage it. (pero cuando it comes to other things, i am a stick in the mud!)

WOOO-HOOO! And YEE-HAW también!

jeje indeed on the being a youth reporter!!! how did they define youth anyway??? that makes it sound like yall are 9 years old or something. Or do they just mean you're not all stuffy y que makes people seem old.

¡Felicidadaes! I was hoping we would hear about this soon. Can't wait to watch your videos.

well, they are big on aiming toward a demographic target market is my guess and opinion. its probably their viewing crew age range. either way, it makes good sense as far as where to focus if you want to affect a lot of peoples thinking for one thing. more impressionable, less rigid in thought, dont have a lifetime of choices to have to justify by sticking to a mindset/party/ideology...dont know about you, but from what i have seen, after college-ish people settle into a mode and a worldview, and dont often do tons of new thinking...and also get a bit cynical about what can be changed (we call it "practical," and i sometimes succumb to it, but its good to read/know a number of different people, sometimes its others' hope that awakens our own again)

but as far as keeping the reporters young...well, they probably figure you focus using your own view, so if you are young you have young people's priorities in mind. (not really a good thing always!) but from what i can see, the 51 of us really run the gamut.

and let me add that to think some things aren't going to change is just wise! some things need to be remade. or just taken apart. knowing this isn't always just cynicism (or age)...but i assume ustedes aren't so simplistic as to not be aware of that. just had to amend mis palabras.

i know, rickb, its pretty cool, small world, right? the reason fox and such , murdoch, are conglomerating and stepping up their control (aside from plain greed) is that the people are taking the press back. it was always supposed to be for the "People," and clearly it has abandoned us, and now people, citizen journalists, are where its at, everyone knows it, peeples with blogs and/or cameras are diverting the old sources of news, making new sources of framing and information, people are just turning away, "tuning out" we might say to borrow some juicy 60s palabras, from the old institutions. and newspapers, radio, and TV is reaching to New Media to either try and incorporate it or coopt it or just get a piece of it, and its ON!

--

thats right mami! kactus is oooooldskool! gracias, amiga.

Will dijo:

GRVTR

Hey, that's great news!

And to become "youth" again, by decree... If only I could be in your shoes! ;-)

Time to get busy stirring shit up!

My access to the net failed yesterday so I am sending off my congratulations late.
Compared to me you are certainly in the young category. Can I offer a tiny piece of advice? Well two pieces, like the 2 cents you advertise.
Stay calm and centered. Don't move your interior into some kind of hypercreative overdrive and overheat your brain and wear down your body and fail to rest. No one else said it here, so me, the old guy, I am saying it. Take good care of yourself, Junior. We care about you.
The other chavito: Never ever think of Viacom again. Do what you need to do about Oregon and ignore Viacom. If something bothers them {they are so massive, I doubt it} so what. I hope you are not going to go where the Big Boy Journalists went and dragged us along too: Self-Censorshipville-- hey that place is disgusting. Stinks like a dead cow.
Everyone here seems to think that this MTV gig is the bomb, so I send along my best wishes for you no matter what the arena. I will never see you on MTV {I get the idea this is MTV on the telephone} but I have already understood the essence of your message and I hope you get it out to those viewers of tiny pantallas everywhere. Andale!

GRVTR

thanks for the advice, RC.

Don't move your interior into some kind of hypercreative overdrive and overheat your brain and wear down your body and fail to rest. No one else said it here, so me, the old guy, I am saying it.

um...do you have any idea what this blog takes from me? jeje. know what time i usually start hitting it? check the timestamp on this comment. "hypercreative overdrive" is my LIFE. this change is actually going to calm it down. focus it, as i said. i should only have to major activities now—video and a weekly column—in 08, rather than so much scattered energy on different web jobs and this blog. this blog will quiet down a bit i'm betting. no one said it? well, my papi says it all the time, and i dont reall listen to him either. i can't! i'm a hyper creative person. if anything wears on me its mundane and domestic issues, not my creative ones.

Never ever think of Viacom again. Do what you need to do about Oregon and ignore Viacom. If something bothers them {they are so massive, I doubt it} so what. I hope you are not going to go where the Big Boy Journalists went and dragged us along too: Self-Censorshipville-- hey that place is disgusting.

its a good warning. but i said that just to be tooootally fair and self-disclosing. for a reader's consideration when i DO talk about viacom, for instance. if i do. this is one thing you do not have to worry about. i want the gig, but nobody, and i mean NObody has ever shut me up about anything. not one thing. you are talking to the kid who made an underground newspaper in college that spit the deal and rocked the place, ended up with one prof quitting (due to exposure of deeds) and another changing. the kid who refused to say the pledge of allegiance in HS, the one who got arrested and thrown in the tombs and pier 57 over marching in the street in protest of the RNC. dont worry, baby. i dont get quiet even in the shadow of a giant. that's just my nature.

OMG Nezua - I'm so excited for both you and Kyle!!!

I just started blogging this morning and had been reading up on Winter Solstice before I checked around to my usual stops. I'm feeling the essence of a time for change and renewal that has been celebrated by people for thousands of years at this time of year. And then I come and see this. I'm so happy for you, your family, and for all of us that will get to watch it all unfold.

I truly hope that today the world is seeing the end of a loooonnnggg winter and the turning to spring.

OK, I will be looking for your name to start showing up regularly in all the places that the iconoclasts get their ideas sliced and diced by the status quo club around February when your Vlog sends out ripples. I would fathom that by Easter, Bill O'Reilly will be sputtering your name and recommending flaying as just the thing you need. I have complete faith that you will be a thorn in the sides of many an apologist and culokisser and I am anticipating some fine moments of offended official egos too. But I still would like you to keep an eye on your health. Good to hear that your dervishy work life will be spinning slower. Blessings to you.
