Obama for Safe Roads.

(01-28) 04:00 PST Washington -- Sen. Barack Obama easily won the African American vote in South Carolina, but to woo California Latinos, where he is running 3-to-1 behind rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he is taking a giant risk: spotlighting his support for the red-hot issue of granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
It's a huge issue for Latinos, who want them. It's also a huge issue for the general electorate, which most vehemently does not. Obama's stand could come back to haunt him not only in a general election, but with other voters in California, where driver's licenses for illegal immigrants helped undo former Gov. Gray Davis.
Clinton stumbled into that minefield in a debate last fall and quickly backed off. First she suggested a New York proposal for driver's licenses for illegal immigrants might be reasonable. Then she denied endorsing the idea, and later came out against them.
THAT'S CLINTON all over again, though, isn't it? No surprise to see the Senator wend with the wind.
People type these articles and make grand sweeping statements like "Latinos want them" and "the general electorate, which most vehemently does not" and they really have no idea what they are talking about. Do they knock on every Latino's door? On every person in the General Electorate's door? Not really. They just type it, and so it is. Nice.
The writer assumes that the national consensus will pile on top of Obama for this move and they warn of dire landmines. I say good for Obama. It is probably true that this is not a safe move. I read the message boards out there, and I don't know what to think. Is it that haters love to type, and humane people don't bother as much? Or is it that Anti-Mexicans and Anti-Migrants and racists and fear-filled nationalists love the Internet...and humane people do not? I joke, it's not so simple. But I don't know what to think about the thick stew of nastiness and bile I meet on the internet when it comes to discussions of ILLEGULZ and such. It's really rather amazing. One post (you can check the one referenced above for a good example) on anything related to migrants or Mexican undocumented workers and BOOM you have fifty pages of hate. Like this army of fear-filled zombies. Chewing and snorting and spitting and cursing. It's upsetting. It's gross. It makes me want to swing on masses. But I can't find them outside of these internet threads. I never hear or see them when I walk about in life. I guess I'm pretty lucky like that. Or they are. Don't know.
Obama standing for safer roads by way of documenting in some way, those who are driving on them? I have to say that's wise as well as courageous.

I think it's funny (not really, but you know what I mean) that they fuss over no driver's licenses, till some white boss man/lady wants some immigrant to drive their kids to school or drive the (Latino) bricklayers out to the job site. Etc.
I've heard whites complain that they shouldn't have licenses, then turn around and complain at how they can't drive anywhere, and what are they HIRING THEM FOR, anyway????
Since they can't make up their minds what they really want, they have no idea what to write. "Latinos want them," is a handy way to avoid responsibility. As the statement "Latinos want American jobs," totally gets businesses (doing the actual hiring) off the hook.
Latinos want them for WHAT? I think, to drive to those American jobs, right?
Whatever happened to, like, INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM??? Did that evaporate during the Reagan era or what?

It's a bug, not a feature. Our elites want foreign brown people here. They need to be foreign so they can be exploited (unionization = deportation). They need to be brown so they can be singled out for treatment. Driver's licenses are a matter of balance between the ease of exploitation and the efficacy of exploitation. It makes them better indentured servants, but it also makes them more human being-like, which can cause problems in the long run.
Remember, kids: count on me to brighten any blog I alight upon.

I know what you mean ... Any time my local paper runs an article about anything having to do with our state's growing Somali community, the things people write in the Online comment forum make me want to fucking puke. The pure bile and ignorance of it makes it hard for me to look my neighbors in the face.
