Not a Republic, but a Corporatocracy

img WHEN IT DOES APPEAR that our government is useless at operating in a way that is in our best interests; when those times arrive that remind us that U.S. "justice" and "law" and government observance of those laws (the ones they purport to defend and protect) is but a carefully-crafted illusion, and a dangerous illusion at that—it is because of events like this:

imgThe Senate today -- led by Jay Rockefeller, enabled by Harry Reid, and with the active support of at least 12 (and probably more) Democrats, in conjunction with an as-always lockstep GOP caucus -- will vote to legalize warrantless spying on the telephone calls and emails of Americans, and will also provide full retroactive amnesty to lawbreaking telecoms, thus forever putting an end to any efforts to investigate and obtain a judicial ruling regarding the Bush administration's years-long illegal spying programs aimed at Americans. The long, hard efforts by AT&T, Verizon and their all-star, bipartisan cast of lobbyists to grease the wheels of the Senate -- led by former Bush 41 Attorney General William Barr and former Clinton Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick -- are about to pay huge dividends, as such noble efforts invariably do with our political establishment.

Further proof that there is no such thing as one Democratic party. I really wish the American political system would be honest about the fact that we really have two or three very loose coalitions of people with very different ideologies (ie, pro-business, theocrats, and social libertarians on the red side; greens, progressives, populists on the blue side; and a lot of crossover from both into a bigger pro-establishment coalition).

I've seen alot of wailing and gnashing of teeth on some liberal-leaning technocrati blogs that "our people" should know better. Well, Warner and Webb are not "my people" even if they are from my state and wear a scarlet letter D instead of R. Never have been and never will be. Glenn sort of touches on that when he says that we shouldn't give donors too much credit, but I don't think he goes far enough in saying that any regular citizen with a strong party affiliation is deluded.

In Sinclair Lewis' 1935 novel 'It Can't Happen Here' he opines that when fascism comes to America it will be draped in the flag, carrying the cross. Seem to recall quite a bit of that in recent history.

kick it, ése.
