Obama, Winning Hearts and Minds
Categorized under Race for '08 | Tags: Obama

WASHINGTON — Sen. Barack Obama swept the Louisiana primary and caucuses in Nebraska and Washington state Saturday night, slicing into Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's slender delegate lead in their historic race for the Democratic presidential nomination. The Illinois senator also won caucuses in the Virgin Islands, completing his best night of the campaign. [...]
Clinton preceded Obama to the podium. She did not refer to the night's voting, instead turning against McCain. "We have tried it President Bush's way," she said, "and now the Republicans have chosen more of the same."
She left quickly after her speech, departing before Obama's arrival. But his supporters made their presence known, sending up chants of "Obama" from the audience as she made her way offstage.

Think of the following when you think of Obama vs. Clinton. This represents what I have learned over 40 years as a military officer and more than 35 years in both management and leadership roles in the business world. When I look at the Presidential race and these two people, I come to the conclusion that Hillary is a manager and Obama is the leader .America needs a leader now more than ever.
We often talk of management and leadership as if they are the same thing. They are not. The two are related, but their central functions are different. Some managers provide some leadership, and some leaders perform some management functions. But, managers don't perform the unique functions of leaders.
Here are some key differences, as I see them:
A manager takes care of where you are; a leader takes you to a new place.
A manager deals with complexity; a leader deals with uncertainty.
A manager is concerned with finding the facts; a leader makes decisions.
A manager is concerned with doing things right; a leader is concerned
with doing the right things.
A manager's critical concern is efficiency; a leader focuses on effectiveness.
A manager creates policies; a leader establishes principles.
A manager sees and hears what is going on; a leader hears when there
is no sound and sees when there is no light.
A manager finds answers and solutions; a leader formulates the
questions and identifies the problems.
A manager looks for similarities between current and previous
problems; a leader looks for differences.
A manager thinks that a successful solution to a management problem
can be used again; a leader wonders whether the problem in a new
environment might require a different solution.—"A Vietnam veteran, lifelong Republican and retired pharmaceutical executive who has never voted anything but Republican...a crusty old white man who likes to golf and yell at the TV...we used to argue about politics when I was kid and he'd tell me that when I grew up I'd get some sense and vote Republican.
Think of the most proud Republican you know--that's this guy." (email from Sara Benincasa)

It's true I talk about hope a lot. I have to. The odds of me being here are not very high.I was born to a teen mom. My dad left me when I was two. I was raised by my single mom, my grandparents, and they didn't have a lot of money, they didn't have a lot of status. They could give me love, and education and hope.
This is our moment. This is our chance. There is a moment in the life of every generation where that spirit of hopefulness has to come through. Where we cast aside the fear and the doubt and the cynicism.
