Stuff White People Like

Categorized under Humor | Tags: , ,

NEW TO THE BLOGROLL is the hilarious site Stuff White People Like. Without even getting into the posts themselves, just the "About" page sports a hilarious assortment of comments as members of the dominant culture get a taste of humor from the other side of the stick and (some) react poorly.

Here's a sampling of one of the posts, each one which is an installment in the ongoing numbered list of stuff, well, that White People Like.

If you want to understand white people, you need to understand indie music. As mentioned before, white people hate anything that’s “mainstream” and are desperate to find things that are more genuine, unique, and reflective of their experiences.

Fortunately, they have independent music. [...]

But BE WARNED, talking about Indie Music with white people is perhaps the most dangerous subject you touch upon. One false move and you will lose their respect and admiration forever. Here are some general rules:

• Bands that have had their songs in an Apple ad are still marginally acceptable
• Bands that have had their songs in ads for other companies are not acceptable
• If you mention a band you like and the other person has heard of them, you lose. They own you. It is essential that you like the most obscure music possible.

Remember, popular artists can turn unpopular in a heartbeat (Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, The Strokes), so you would be best to stick to the following statements: “I love the Arcade Fire,” “I still think the Montreal scene is the best in the world,” “I would die without Stereogum or Fluxblog“* and “Joanna Newsom is maybe the most original artist today.”

*-do not substitute Stereogum for Pitchfork, as this is one of those things that used to be cool, but is now not cool.

Stuff White People Like. #41 Indie Music

This is not a site to go and have meaningful social construct discussions on. And you better bring your sense of humor and a few grains of salt—if ya be self-identifying as "White." But man oh man is it funny. Especially in an age where many sites these days think the pinnacle of humor is the same old soulless "snark" that, frankly, should have been put to bed back in 2005, when it still had some breath in it. This is raw, insightful, and original humor.

Now...damn. What does this pic remind me of?

I just clicked over there.

That site is hilarious.

its funny...and what's smart about it is it is all about culture/lack of culture/appropriation of culture. not skin.

That sort of site makes me think ... WHY do I like sushi (because I did go to Japan in college, best food in the world), or whatever. Is it because I'm looking for the exotic thrill to pump myself in the eyes of other whites or is it because I like it for itself? A lot of what passes for 'white culture' is shallow and insecure and sort of icky.

it does make you think. and it is smart. and granted, there are some overlap of class issues throughout. but i do like how it gives those pokes and makes you question, but indirectly. through humor. and it never seems quite vicious, though it is cutting!

*snerk at "Barack Obama" commenting in the About section*

The posts do go above a certain class threshold. But that's only if you like dissecting your humor (and I do, so I make a lot of things unfunny with time). The entries are original and hilarious, though. Sounds like this sociology teacher's anecdotes after he studied in Malawi. I'm hearing all the entries in his know-it-all tone, intended to spark awe in women's faces. (Back when my school was all womanly, all the time.) I'd love to show this to him; he'd likely love it and think himself a Cool White Man. (And who knows? That site may tell him the same thing about himself!)

yeah, and pat, i do think there is overlap between the things you mention, too. it is possible to find sushi and enjoy it because its a new food! (i dont care for it, jeje). but maybe some of the enjoyment is cultural appropriation in an "icky" way as you say. (doesn't it depend a bit on how people "use" or present or feel about their liking, you know?) i dont think its wrong, either way, to enjoy sushi if ya want. but i do think it is good to get those questions moving in the mind.

yes, M, isnt analyzing humor a grand ole time? :)

Pat Logan dijo:

Yes, indeed.

Sushi is an acquired taste, that's true, sort of like beer, which I don't care for. I like tequila better. LOL

I found this a few days ago via a message board I frequent. It's definitely one of my favorites, but it makes me feel a little odd. Is my Chicanidad in question if I like Mos Def, listen to NPR and happen to love This American Life? Eek. I haven't had an identity crisis like this since I started college and joined MEChA.

I wonder when they'll get to adopting babies from so-called "third world" nations.

yes, with a grain of salt as i said. :)

A lot of the humor passes me by because I live in the South and the white people I know really don't like the same stuff those other white people like.

Some of the entries seem universal though. I think my favorite was "hating your parents" one-upsmanship... although the "Asian Fusion" was also very good.

yes. you point out the flaws that must exist in trying to group any "type" of people. in the end, its false. i read the site knowing that. but it cracks me up in a lot of places, and it's nice to see the humor reversed when there's so much (unfunny and harmful) humor coming from the other direction.

and cindylu, i feel you. i mean, i am an arts major, and a filmmaker, so. the site is always slamming on that. but to people who get upset, i just have to say "dont own it if it aint yours." or as i used to hear "if it dont apply, let it fly." in this world one has to know who they are. other people cant define us, verdad?

I'm going to change my "about Tom" link to just point to that site.

This is hysterical! The indie music one you pulled out is SO true - it's like obscure bands are are the genital compensation of choice among the hipster set ... The thing is, I like a lot of the things on that list, and am not ashamed of that. It's all in good fun. If we can't laugh at ourselves, what good is living, anyway? I like to think of myself as a pretty culturally and socially sensitive person, so I often have this half-awareness going on when I'm doing something that could be construed by someone who doesn't know me as shallow or a co-optation. But, you know what, you can't let that stuff cripple you. You seize life, love what you love, let people think what they think, and get on with things.

Maybe I'm weird, though ... My partner and I think "white people" behavior is really funny. We recently moved to the second whitest state in the country from a fairly cool and diverse city, and looking at "our own folk" under this kind of microscope is sometimes amusing, sometimes frightening. We have a catch phrase we use anytime we see white people acting stupid or jumping onto some lame pop-cultural bandwagon; one of us will look at the other and say, "What are caucasians up to now?" We picked it up from some black comedienne on TV (the lady who used to be a panelist on "Best Week Ever." Can't find her name right now), and thought it summarized so much about the world.

i've always really liked your mindset, jaime, since i first read you. you really seem to have a good balance going on.

Had time today to read only Divorce and part of the natural remedy post, but both are hilarious. {"White people must find someone to blame..."} I do not know the writer, but he {she} definitely is a master, up there with Clemens and Voltaire.
Now Nez, you must find the Latin equivalent for us. Or become that person. There a lot of laughs there too.

I...can't...stop...laughing.

I try my damndest to ride to work. I've gotta bookmark the page with:

If you know a person who rides to work, you should take them aside and say “Hey, thanks. Sincerely, The Earth.” Then give a thumbs up. That white person will ride home on a cloud.

And oh my gosh:

White people will first ask which non-profit and are they hiring? After that, they will be filled with euphoria and will invite you to more parties to tell this story to their friends, so that they can feel great.

Thank you.

Though I might not do any chores or get out to my social life thanks to you linking this.
