Tus Mensajes [Old School Divide]

FROM THE MAIL:

I thought I'd bring this to your attention. I live in Atlanta. A commercial started running about 10 days ago that shows a black guy (I'm black) talking about how millions of jobs are being lost to illegal immigrants. As he talks, only black faces are shown in the video. I don't know if this ad is being shown in other cities, but I've never seen it before. It has aired 3 times in the last 10 days, and the next time it does I'll make a point to get the name of the sponsor. I can't help to think that in this Republican dominated state, some Karl Rove types are trying to stir the pot and create dissension as we head further into the campaign season. I smell old school divide and conquer tactics. For what it's worth.

It's true. So easy for disease-minded power brokers to jam wedges in sore places. We must not let them. We must remember what we have in common, and we must nurture those things. And we must see where a true enemy lies. And be ready at all times to love. And to direct the fight to those who bring it.

Peace. (and Justice.)

Unfortunately, we have a situation in both the US and in Mexico, where the poor fight over crumbs. Please excuse my honesty, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I have to say that Mexican tend to be more racist against blacks than white people are. Also, both in California and in Washington DC I have seen black people who are very anti-Mexican, anti-immigration. The poorer folks, in my experience, people such as sheetrockers. The black people who traditianally did the dirty labor work are thinking the Mexican are undercutting their prices.

The sad part is that they should join forces, and work together, but like the farmers here in Vermont, they are just too independant to join forces with anyone.

not "they," we. we should all join forces and work together.

i welcome your honesty, but i do not agree with it. while anecdotal experience is very satisfying to the person providing it, it can't account for historical facts ((the Chilpancingo Constitution for one thing) or that hate groups such as the KKK are not filled with mexicans, or that mexican americans will vote for a black man...and so on...

no, i think the wedge is driven in—when it is—by those who sit atop the ladder that props up a dominant culture of "whiteness." for they have the most to gain and to lose by the rest joining forces, as you say.

that being said, yes, poor people do fight over scraps, and peoples who are denigrated by the dominant culture do soak up the memes of racism and use it on each other, no doubt.
