SOMEONE CALL BUCHANAN BARBIE!!! Because judging by a trip to the local Big Lots! store, the white Barbie Doll population is being overrun by teeming hordes of darkie dolls!!!!
It was actually pretty cool to see. Things have changed a lot since the days I played with Barbies. Wait, what?

Babies.

That's pretty awesome. Maybe I should have gone to Big Lots instead of Walmart to buy my niece a birthday present. When I went, it was three aisles of white dolls, with one black doll. I ended up getting her an etch a sketch and some bubbles.

Well... since Big Lots sells "leftovers", what it really says is that other stores don't WANT to sell dolls of color. And it doesn't necessarily mean that Big Lots does, they just take what they get. I don't care for these particular dolls anyway, esp the Barbie, because they are still just Barbie with a tan. How about some actual women of color features? How about not using one tan doll to "represent" all Latina, Black, Indigenous, & Arab women (and heaven forbid we let the Asians represent)? And what's up with the bright-ass pink lipstick?

you make great points. i did look closely at their features when i was there and had the same thought. and i guess i'm jaded enough that i don't expect them to show anyone but blonde barbie, so this was like "wow!"
the pale pink lipstick does work better on the lightskinned dolls. i think the brown barbies need something bolder.

it has been a while since i bought a barbie doll (i do know barbie does get "makeovers" that might involve plastic surgery in real life) but the dolls do look like they are of lower quality (although, this may be done across the board at mattel in order to save money). AND if you notice the boxes they are barely large enough to hold the doll, no accessories or anything special in other words these dolls aren't "special" and are meant to be sold at a lower price. Since these dolls are meant to be sold at a lower price who else is expected to buy these but the people who supposedly can not afford the more expensive dolls? People of color, of course! The white ones are of course meant for the so-called "white trash" and of course as a reminder of what is and has been the standard. (Actually, it also reminded me of those few in power, the WASP, who control the masses.) Seriously! Another point is as Aaminah said is that the dolls are "leftovers" and sometimes the items that go to big lots, ross, etc., are specifically made to be sold there to appear to be "leftovers." (And yes, I did have a lot of Barbies as a child, actually I still do...in boxes in the garage...).
