Cesar Chavez Day?

Categorized under Comida , Cultura , Raza , día festivo | Tags: , , , , , ,

¡FELIZ CUMPLEANOS, Señor Chavez! Or...Salud! It's been a while since you've been gone. Your work and deeds and purpose and name carry on.

As farmworkers and laborers across America continue to struggle for fair treatment and fair wages, we find strength in what Cesar Chavez accomplished so many years ago,'' Obama said in a statement from his campaign. "And we should honor him for what he's taught us about making America a stronger, more just, and more prosperous nation.

"That's why I support the call to make Cesar Chavez's birthday a national holiday. It's time to recognize the contributions of this American icon to the ongoing efforts to perfect our union."

My only concern is that I think Chavez is becoming the token Mexican, as if his struggles are supposed to represent every Latin@. While I think it's important to remember him, I think it's even more important to recognize the history of Latin@s in America, because I'm afraid that it will get erased.

Done. My first wife was a farm worker, rallied and marched with Mr. Chavez. She always spoke very highly of him. There's also a man from Corpus Christi you might look into. Dr. Hector P. Garcia. founder of the American GI Forum. Very much a local hero for all the tireless work he did for veterans.

lol! I'm from Corpus, so I know about Dr Garcia. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone else mention him!

I see your point Meep, but I bristle at you using the term token Mexican because it would have to imply MLK was the token black guy, considering the parallels between the two. Token is really a term reserved for someone who fills a gap with no purpose other than filling a space. Cesar Chavez was exemplary as a human being period.

When he died we had foreign countries send emissaries to his funeral at the little one horse twon church in Delano, even the Pope acknowledged him. His death was international news.

We do need to point out other exemplary Latinos without a doubt but never to the point where we get sick of the best example we have : salt of the earth, flawed but formidable, true man of the people Cesar Chavez.

As for getting the word out about allthose other fine people of La Raza Cosmica: Si Se Puede.

kick it, ése.
