I HAD WANTED in some way to remember Lt. Ehren Watada, as this anniversary of the Iraq Invasion passed us. Remember him? Yeah. Mad respect for this cat. But the media has drowned out that story, it's slipped away, they lost it...we've moved on to Jeremiah Wright and other pressing matters. Here's to you, sir. You are one of the heroes of this war to me.
You know who was a real Citizen Journalist? Brad Will. I feel trapped into making cute video cookies with my weekly deadline. I want to haul my ass down to the ruins of Katrina or spend weeks getting next to some hidden or ignored truth that the public needs to know about spend time building a story, building rapport, investigating, planning...and really busting out wild with something that matters. This is jingles and I want to do a concept album. I feel I am chasing snacky, quickly rotating headlines. Hey, don't get me wrong. It's a way to pay some bills. And I am proud of winning it. But I long to do some good in the face of all the harm being dropped down on so many out there. And I'm more a part of a corporate entertainment empire now than I am in being a useful eye for the public. That's how I'm feeling lately, at least.
Who else has been forgotten by the media who I'd like to remember?
The Lakota Indians and their secession. I didn't tell you, I got in touch with Russell Means through a fellow Street Team member (Gracias, Christine!) and he is quite willing to do an interview with me, so that's great. I have to confirm with him. But of course, the interview is not part of my paid work, outside of which I haven't had any time lately....so it's stalled.
And I wanted to post on Lorna Dee's drive to bring radio broadcasting to many people, I think it's a great idea. I think we talk so much about how corrupt and useless our mainstream media is, and for me it has stopped feeling useful. This insight. So we attach ourselves to worthless media and follow it around forever? No. We simply need to invest in creating and becoming alternate news sources. Alternate media. Rather than simply become coopted into all the various mainstream Citizen Journalist arms of every single corporate entity that decides its hip or where the ratings or money reside, we need to tune out more from media that shapes so many minds and puts in place the passive acceptance of so much harm and harmful systems, and zone in on the job ourselves. Which means funding and such, but not as much as once upon a time. We have cameras, we have Youtube. We have talent. In that we can create entire television stations. They won't look like the old model, but the new model never does.
I think it's about time.

I think this post was in my dream last night.
All I want to do is cover stories that NEED to be told instead of all this mainstream shit garbage that rains from mainstream broadcasting tv, radio, and film.
This aching post struck a chord in me.
Contigo,
Sudy

oh, darling one! seriously, i was just ticking off the days till i read this point here. i am smiling and hugging you electronically right now.
here's the rub:
We simply need to invest in creating and becoming alternate news sources.
exactly. a big list of us have been saying so, working towards this, for some time now. how, exactly, is this done? as you point out, it's one thing to "pay the bills," it's another thing to break the stranglehold that the SCLM has over most people's minds.
i look to you, frankly, to know what will work in the future. your blog, for example, is 1000% more fascinating than mine, it's clear you get what's now much more than i do. and look at you with your mtv gig! as i think you're finding out, anyone with a smiling face and a brain can play The Game; the question becomes, do you want to? there are risks and rewards either way. but in the meantime, let's continue to strategize. what you're basically saying is, "how do we convince a rich person to fund a movement?" because right now, there is no other way to unlock large sums of money to be used in any 'cause.' or we could have a revolution, you know which one i like. ;-)

I hear you. I experienced the same "understanding" of my place in the corporate entertainment empire. Here's how I coped: for every 3 or so I did for "them" I used the success of those pieces to push for the leeway to do an "enterprise" piece for me. Those are the ones I'm most proud of. Those are the ones that moved the needle a little. Sneaky, right? But effective. I like what you've done so far! Keep 'em guessing.

Stick to the MTV thing until the contract is up in a year and get some newsy work record, week by week, lined up in a row, and when the day comes to enter some other line of production, you'll have the evidence that you can grind that organ.
As to the idea that only by soliciting the cash of a rich person could an alternative media universe have its Big Bang, well, maybe not.
It seems that if the initial message is attractive enough and the need is perceived by the mass of small donors, no Mr. Rich is necessary.
Observe the donation scheme of the Obama campaign. I know it is not all small donors, but enough of it is that an amount in the millions per month is reasonable to shoot for as a starting point.
I identify 100% with your feeling as I got there in 1975 and just walked away from the image game.
But if the internet, youtube, blogs, vlogs, streams and especially, the extreme low cost of digital production existed then, I might not have.
The remaining problem: production now costs so little and so many capable persons have been pumped out of film and visual art programs as well as the self taught producers, that only those with the best production abilities and the GLOSSIEST ideas, not necessarily the best ones, will get noticed.
Now, the Nez is at the noticed point. Next he has to make the iconoclastic outlook pay the bills and help him get a little more ahead than indentured servitude, which is precisely where he finds himself right now.
Let it simmer for the next 10 months Nez. By then, I bet you will have woken up one day with the Brilliant Inspiration of the business side of the equation.
Only yesterday you were dealing with the Nazi in-law and sweating the quotidian.
In ten more months you might be the Obama White House Official Vlogger. But that may turn out to be too Regular Size anyway.
Every day, now, try to imagine and discuss with others just how the media YOU want to see would look and how it would be served up piping hot. Then connect the dots. Have an initial low cost path and a later higher cost plan.
Hint: There is no Apple Network yet, is there?
Right now build up the "reel" and just get ready. Suerte!

I've got to ditto RC, and while Carmen's idea is great, even though perhaps working with a different corporate environment, MTV does not give off the vibe as being that flexible. But they do have other interests, and taking care of business now may open those doors.
You're building your base and doing an excellent job. When you compare the numbers: feeds, individual visits and hits of today, compared to where you were just last summer, then your base, and the multiplying effect they have (which can not really be measured accurately) resulting from the spread of your ideas, presentation, and interests, make the effect you have greater than you might imagine. By simply setting a standard and perhaps raising the bar for others, their successes and results are a secondary reflection of your own work.
When you move on, and it will be a gradual process, no magic will be involved, just kharma and the talent you have proven and are exhibiting. You have a high balance in the kharma department. RC is dead-on-point in emphasizing your commitment to MTV as being a crucial opportunity to prove your chops. This can be your portfolio and also your proof of dedication and reliabilty.

MTV seems the most flexible of any huge media outfit i see out there, and yet, they are still doing their agenda, as one could expect. can't really knock them for that, but just feeling sort of penned inside someone else's agenda, a bit. the time limit frustrates me.
you are right about feed numbers and such, getting out there more. it's all helpful. good to remember that. and the portfolio. true.
thanks for the words and the wisdom.

if people used media for change, like really used it... it'd be a dangerous and wonderful thing. we need some out-of-control media in the positive sense. uncensored, unvarnished truth; clearly labeled opinion; free and honest debate.

I think Nez has said this too, so pardon me. Media is a fine and marvelous thing, it can be bent in any direction is what must be remembered.
I would like to see the population of the US and the globe using their BRAINS more and relying on media less. I can't believe it, but after watching some of the things happening in the latest US Presidential Race {watching strictly by reading text} I think a corner has been turned and a new level of media sophistication may be occurring. M- I think You Tube is what you are talking about {at least for now} but since I refuse to watch moving images I am not sure what goes on over there.
There ARE plenty of Sunday Morning Opinion shows and I don't watch those either as the network and the anchor control the message by who they invite and the questions they ask and when they choose to pop the ads on. {Used to work in that game.}
It does seem to me that The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, and Maher's Show {does he have a show?} would be scathing opinion.
So, why not start producing the M Minutes for You Tube and see if you can move up to the longer times and bigger audiences? It costs very little, mostly time.
Thanks for this space to use for mouthing off Nez. I do love your blog.
Like M, I like to read well considered or even satirical opinion, and the blog world works for me.
This is a better way than ten years ago I assure you.

good luck! I believe that you are going to use these MTV connections and experiences to move on to something bigger and better :D You have a family, gots to pay the bills, and I'm sure you get a new computer full of cool software for free every year, right? :P Money is only good for what you can get from it and do with it and I have faith that even if you have to do other jobs for a while to pay for what you really want to do, you will use that money to do something that is fufilling to you and helps others as well.
